Ohio State official visit set the bar ‘really high’ for four-star wide receiver Vernell Brown III

Ohio State official visit set the bar ‘really high’ for four-star wide receiver Vernell Brown III

COLUMBUS –  Four-star Orlando (Fla.) Jones wide receiver Vernell Brown III, the No. 35 overall prospect in the On3 Industry Ranking, has visited Ohio State at least three times in his recruitment and as a result, has seen almost everything that needs to see.

Most of Brown’s family, on the other hand, had not visited Ohio State prior to his official visit this weekend. It was important for the coaching staff to make them feel at home in Columbus, which is exactly what they did this weekend.

“Everybody really liked it,” Brown told Lettermen Row. “Before going up there my mom’s initial thought was that Ohio was far and cold. But I think her getting up there, seeing it for herself this weekend and seeing their program and what they have to offer, her perspective has definitely changed on it.

“I think they will have no concerns or no drawbacks if I decide to commit to Ohio State.”

Brown spent most of his visit with Ohio State wide receivers coach Brian Hartline and he got some additional insight into how Hartline coaches his receivers.

“I mean, it was good. Me and Coach Hart talked a little bit about everything. Some ball stuff, as always, some life and just being able to experience a little bit of his coaching going over film with him.”

Brown also enjoyed his meetings with Ohio State head coach Ryan Day and offensive coordinator Chip Kelly.

“With coach Day, we were just talking mainly about how Ohio State, like they’re the most proven of any school when it comes to the receiver position, the offense and how the offense will be consistent because it’s an offensive-minded head coach. And now bringing in coach Chip Kelly, got a chance to sit down with him. Learn some different things, learn some new things about not only Ohio State but the way an offense works and his adjustments to different defenses.”

Day believes that Brown has the ability to play the H-Back position that current Buffalo Bills wide receiver and former Ohio State standout Curtis Samuel made famous in Columbus.

“I did talk with coach Day and just talked about that H position in the offense and potentially being able to play inside and outside but mainly that H position.”

Brown still has official visits scheduled to Miami, Florida and Florida State so he is not willing to name a leader in his recruitment yet but he did acknowledge that Ohio State has set a high bar on his first official visit.

“I wouldn’t have a leader before I go through all my official visits. While Ohio State was definitely a 10 out of 10 visit and me and my family enjoyed it, it was only the first official visit,” he said. “I still have three more so I wanted to give all four schools an equal opportunity to show me why I fit and why they are particularly the best fit for me.

“I don’t really have a leader right now but I can say Ohio State has set the bar really high.”
