Enterprise (Ala.) four-star safety Eric Winters’ final decision won’t be significantly affected by where his two teammates — four-star EDGE Zion Grady and three-star cornerback Andrew Purcell — end up committing. But he liked experiencing a Miami official visit with his friends this weekend.

Winters, the No. 65 overall prospect and No. 8 safety in the 2025 class, was back on Miami’s campus this weekend for the second time this season after last visiting Coral Gables for an unofficial visit in early April. Winters has remained high on Miami and considers the Hurricanes a top-three program along with Auburn and Georgia, who he will also visit this month. Winters isn’t rushing his recruitment and will know when the time is right to make an announcement, but Miami made a strong case this weekend.

“It’s really a great town and the coaches are really good – just getting the vibe around the players, seeing why they like Miami and chose Miami (helps),” said Winters, who was hosted by Cole McConathy and also spent a lot of time with Raul Aguirre. “(McConathy and Aguirre) chose Miami because of the coaches, really, and that it was where they can maximize their potential. (Aguirre) said the coaches are more than football coaches, are life coaches, really. He said in high school his grades weren’t the best, he got here and now he’s one of the best students on the team.”

Winters also says he was very impressed talking to coach Mario Cristobal, calling him “the most genuine guy I’ve met during this process.”

“He’s the type of guy you want to go to work with every day,” Winters said.

Winters also had high praise for his primary recruiter, Derek Nicholson.

“Just being around coach DNic, he’s the type of guy you want to play for and work for,” Winters said. “He’s the type of guy you want leading you for the next three or four years to help you become a better guy in life.”

There were some distance concerns coming into the visit … but those were somewhat alleviated.

“If I come here it’s a good bit away from home, so you have to have somebody lead you in the right direction,” Winters said. “They talked to us about the distance part and it’s really not that bad, because it’s a straight shot out of here from Pensacola and Panama.”

Miami is recruiting Winters as a hybrid defender who can play across the field and not be limited to safety, he said, and has discussed with him how he can be used in the run game and dropped in coverage. Winters has said he’s open to playing wherever he’s needed.

He sums up off the visit that Miami “really set the standard for what an OV should look like, to be honest.”

Winters has not set a hard date he’d like to make a decision by.

“Not yet, but I’d like to do it after the 14th (of June) because that’s my last OV,” Winters said, adding that when he announces he won’t completely shut down his recruitment because in the changing landscape of college football it makes sense to keep his options somewhat open.

CaneSport’s Take

Auburn has been the most-discussed name for Winters for much of the spring, but Miami has done a good job staying in the mix and remaining a contender in the race. There was a time where it felt like the Hurricanes were more of a dark horse, but I think Miami has progressed to the point where it has a legitimate chance for the four-star prospect. As he looks toward the future, Winters says the key will be finding that genuine connection with coaches and a program. “(At Miami) they were showing you why you should come be a Hurricane,” he said. “(On the other upcoming visits) I’ll compare them to Miami’s OV.”
