Mark Pope on winning a national title: ‘Nothing short of that’s going to be acceptable’
The aspirations are obvious at Kentucky as the winningest team in the history of college basketball. That makes it a very clear job for Mark Pope and the Wildcats as they enter the first season of his tenure at his alma mater.
Pope spoke on the clear-cut goals for him and his new program while on ‘The Paul Finebaum Show’ this week at the SEC Spring Meetings in Destin. He said the sole focus for them is on winning the ninth national title for the school. Beyond that, no other outcome would be satisfactory for any of them.
“There’s a real dichotomy because our goals and the expectations are clear,” said Pope. “The expectations are different than anywhere else. It’s number nine. Like, assignment number nine and that’s what we talk about every single day is that our job is to come here and hang the ninth banner at the University of Kentucky.”
“Nothing short of that’s going to be acceptable,” Pope said.
However, while that’s what they want most, looking only at that potential future won’t get them there. As Pope explained, it’ll take them taking one step at a time along the way to eventually end up where they’re wanting to be, which starts right now in how they’re building their first team.
“With that understood as the goal, there’s this dichotomy in that you have that out there on the horizon but where your focus has to be every single day is getting better every single day. That’s how you get there,” said Pope. “If you spend all your time looking out at the horizon, we’re not going to make the progress that we need to do every day. It’s just too big for us right now.”
“What we’re doing as a staff? We’re putting together a roster, we’re trying to make this roster better every day,” Pope said.
As of May 30th, Kentucky has 12 players overall on the roster for 2024-2025. Nine of those are transfers from out of the portal while they’re also adding a trio of freshmen.
The full dozen, if not possibly one or two more, will arrive come the middle of next month. From there, Pope says the next steps will begin toward their ultimate objective of a national championship.
“Our guys will be on campus June 10th. That’s what we’ll be kind of onboarding with week zero. And then, June 17th, we start our first workouts with the guys,” said Pope.
“The most important thing is that we walk off the court a little bit better than we walked on. And we will accept nothing less,” Pope said. “We’ll be tyrannical about that because that’s how you achieve that long-term goal of hanging number nine. It’s just focusing on getting better every single day. That’s why our guys are coming here. They have dreams and goals of their own. All of that comes down to the very simple prospect of setting a goal every day, having a metric you can record, and analyzing your growth every single day. That’s how we’re going to approach these goals.”
Pope has laid these intentions out plainly from the moment he arrived as Kentucky’s next head coach. It’s now about living up to them somehow over his career back in the bluegrass as he and the Wildcats prepare to begin taking their strides towards potentially doing that this season.
