‘It’s my first SEC offer. That’s big to me’: 2025 quarterback Ty Hawkins reacts to Ole Miss offer

‘It’s my first SEC offer. That’s big to me’: 2025 quarterback Ty Hawkins reacts to Ole Miss offer

2025 Claudia Taylor Johnson (Tex.) quarterback Ty Hawkins received a visit from Ole Miss offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr. earlier this week. Afterwards, the Rebel assistant got in touch with the four-star prospect to deliver the good news.

“He got a chance to see me at practice, see me throw and run the offense,” Hawkins said. “Then he told my coach he wanted to talk. He called me and extended the offer.”

The junior prospect comes in as the No. 57 overall prospect, No. 6 quarterback nationally and No. 11 overall prospect in Texas, Per On3 rankings. On3 director of scouting Charles Power sees what programs around Texas like SMU have seen to offer early. He talked with On3’s Billy Embody about it.

“Ty Hawkins is coming off a big debut season at San Antonio Johnson High and looks like the top 2025 quarterback prospect in Texas at this juncture and checks in at No. 57,” Power said. “The 6-foot, 188-pounder is an athletic playmaker with good arm strength and plus mobility. Hawkins has the juice to make far has throws and rip off long runs when the play breaks down. He’s a bigger-framed quarterback despite his 6-foot height and has a 9.75-inch hand.

“Hawkins threw for 2,167 yards and 30 touchdowns and ran for 920 yards and eight more scores as a sophomore. He’s also registered as one of the more athletic 2025 passers on the camp circuit this spring, running a 4.69 second 40-yard dash, 4.26 second short shuttle and jumping 35.8 inches in the vertical.”

According to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average which utilizes all four major recruiting media companies, he’s the No. 212 overall prospect in the country, No. 16 quarterback nationally and No. 34 overall prospect in Texas.

“I don’t know my camp schedule yet but I do want to get out and take some trips this summer,” Hawkins said. “I know I definitely want to get to Ole Miss soon.

He says he is set to get back on the phone with Weis “soon” and they will discuss a future visit. Despite never taking a trip to Oxford, Miss., Hawkins is more than intrigued by the Rebels attention.

“I was extra excited because it was my first SEC offer,” Hawkins said. “That’s big to me. Ole Miss has been a top program for a while and coach (Lane) Kiffin is a great coach.”

Right now, despite not being in a hurry to make any declarations or top schools list, Ty Hawkins has a few schools he likes early on.

“Texas Tech has been applying a lot of pressure,” Hawkins said. “I like coach (Joey) McGuire. TCU and coach (Kendal) Briles and coach (Sonny) Dykes. They’re super cool. UTSA is always there, too. Coach (Jeff) Traylor is great, they’re always there. I love talking and being around him.”

2025 QB Ty Hawkins (SA Johnson) exploded on the scene Saturday completing 23-33 passes for 317 yds & 5 TDs along with 151 yds rushing & 1 TD vs a talented Judson team.

Watkins says he is looking forward to getting out on the camp circuit and seeing what all is out there.

“I want to get to Ohio State and LSU,” Hawkins said. “I know I will be going to a camp at Texas. It’s just down the road.”

Ole Miss is still keeping in touch, though. He says he just got off the phone with the Rebels before OMSpirit spoke with him.

“Yeah I have been hearing from them a lot,” Hawkins said. “Coach (Sterlin) Gilbert was just talking to me. I talk to him, Weis and the rest of the recruiting staff all the time now.

“A lot of the RPO stuff we do at Johnson is very similar to what Ole Miss does,” Hawkins said. “The offense isn’t too big of a deal but I do know I want to throw it a lot wherever I go.”

Hawkins was named District 28-6A Offensive MVP after his sophomore season. UTSA leads the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine over Baylor, Houston and SMU. Despite the early interest from several programs, including two new offers from Oklahoma State and Oregon, Hawkins is not in any rush to make a decision.
