Mailbag Podcast: Where are the Vols with top-targets in recruiting?
Tennessee added a final piece to the 2023 recruiting class this week and continue to evaluate top 2024 targets on the recruiting trail. Will this month set up for a big recruiting event at the end of the month, officials for June and commitments in July?
The current team is at home for a couple of weeks prior to the start of June workouts. Which players are poised to step up and become household names for fans this season? Which freshmen could make a major impact this season and how deep is this running back room?
Brent Hubbs, Austin Price, Rob Lewis and Grant Ramey discuss it all on this week’s edition of the Volquest Podcast. It’s presented by Exterior Home Solutions. For a free estimate, give them a call at 865-524-5888.
Quotes of the Pod
Austin Price: “Well, it starts with the scouting department with guys like Brandon Lawson, Trey Johnson, Charlie High – all those guys. Then, they get the tape to the coaches. They start deciding who is what. Let’s say the chart is five to one with five being a no-brainer and one being ‘nah.’ They start putting them on the board and start working through it. It goes to what kind of ties do they have to the kid. How realistic is the kid? If the kid is a top-end kid who lives 20 miles outside of Tuscaloosa, what are the chances? Your chances go way down. It goes back to character and then sometimes kids get on campus and teams find out there’s medical problems. A kid a fan thinks could be a five-star no-brainer, all of a sudden could have a medical issue or an off the field issue. Maybe not doing well off the field. It can change. Those things never really get out. Sometimes fans wonder why they didn’t get some guys and sometimes there’s a backstory to why a kid doesn’t end up here or there. To me, there’s a lot of inner workings that go into decisions and it is not as simple as a star on the charts.”
Brent Hubbs: “There’s multiple layers to it. It starts with the raw evaluation, and then you really start to dive into it. That’s why it’s so hard when a new staff comes in and they are playing so much catch up. It’s not just grabbing a recruiting list and going and recruiting those guys. You’ve got to figure out all the variables that go into it and if you haven’t been recruiting that caliber of kid in this area, then it changes a good bit and makes it challenging in that way. It is a very detailed and very long proves that involves a lot of people.”
