Iowa basketball hands out a flurry of 2025 offers
It’s that time of year. If you are a long time follower of basketball recruiting, particularly Iowa basketball recruiting in the Fran McCaffery era, after the first couple of evaluation periods, the Hawkeyes tend to roll out several new offers.
That’s exactly what happened on Tuesday when McCaffery and his staff extended five new scholarship offers in the Class of 2025 coming off the first two big AAU weekends of the spring. Iowa also offered a pair of rising prospects earlier this month in versatile forward Ryder Frost and shooting guard Ryan Crotty. Both have really seen their profiles and offer lists expand in the month of May.
As we recently profiled, Iowa is expected to have three scholarships to fill in the Class of 2025. Our outlook was point guard, shooting wing, and big man were going to be priorities in this class and the new offers certainly reflect that.
Let’s dive into the new offers and the competition. First at combo guard is Mazi Mosley from California. The 6-foot-4 guard is a dynamic scorer who has improved his jumper and can score at different levels and plays solid defense. Iowa entered the race with an offer on Tuesday. He also has offers from San Diego State, Cal, and Arizona State.
Also in the shooting guard court is 2025 guard Simon Walker. The 6-foot-4 guard is out of the usual Iowa footprint as he is from Alabama. Iowa has been watching him and recruiting him in recent weeks and extended the offer on Tuesday. His best offer is from Auburn, which will be a challenge for the Hawkeyes given the Tigers are in-state for the Huntsville native. Tennessee, Clemson, and Ole Miss are also monitoring Walker.
The other wing who picked up an offer is wing forward Chase Thompson from Minnesota. Thompson stands 6-foot-7 and is more of a small forward. He plays AAU basketball with Jack McCaffery, the youngest son of Fran McCaffery, so the Iowa head coach has seen him play plenty of games this spring. He also holds a scholarship offer from Nebraska.
At the power forward position, the Hawkeyes have also offered Brady Koehler from Indiana. He is 6-foot-8 forward and one of the highest rising prospects on the AAU circuit this spring. His profile has certainly been raised and Iowa is now in the mix. The Hawkeyes join Butler, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Virginia Tech, and Stanford as offering Koehler.
The final offer went out to a true post player and big man in Tommy Ahneman from North Dakota. The 6-foot-11 and 240 pound center is playing for the Howard Pulley squad in the Nike EYBL this year. He is from West Fargo, ND and has an offer from Penn State. Wisconsin is also mulling an offer and he has a host of mid-major schools already on board with offers.
The next step will be seeing if any of these prospects end up taking official or unofficial visits to Iowa City in the next month.
