JD PicKell reveals if Tennessee or LSU is closer to making College Football Playoff
The Tennessee Volunteers and LSU Tigers both expect to be competing for a spot in the College Football Playoff soon. However, there are only so many spots available as long as the College Football Playoff is at four teams. Because of that, it’s likely that one team makes the playoff before the others.
On3’s JD PicKell explained why he thinks LSU is closer to making the CFP on The Hard Count.
“I lean LSU simply because of what I know to be true about Brian Kelly and his track record of winning and then recruiting in the state of Louisiana,” PicKell said. “Now, to the exact same toke, Josh Heupel is an absolute wizard.”
“So, I wouldn’t bet against either of them being teams that end up making that expanded playoff here in the near future,” PicKell said.
“Just Brian Kelly’s resume, Tennessee fans don’t get up in arms, Brian Kelly’s resume for my money I just know more about him as a coach. A longer track record of winning, has won everywhere he’s been, and now he gets armed with SEC recruiting power and recruiting in Louisiana. Like, they made the title game his first year there. So, I’ll say LSU right now but I think both teams will definitely be in that race.”
Both LSU and Tennessee are going to run into a fundamental issue when it comes to making the College Football Playoff. There are a lot of teams competing for just four slots. Considering how stacked the rest of the SEC and Big Ten are, not to mention the other Power Five conferences and Notre Dame, there isn’t room for every team to make the CFP.
However, with the College Football Playoff expanding to 12 teams in 2024, there is going to be a lot more room for teams like LSU and Tennessee.
JD PicKell on what Harold Perkins means for LSU
Harold Perkins is one of the best and most versatile players in the country. As JD PicKell explained, he’s incredibly important for the LSU defense.
“What does it mean for LSU?” PicKell said.
“Now they play a lot of quarterbacks that are going to be mobile. Whoever ends up starting at Ole Miss — whether it’s Jackson Dart or Spencers Sanders — they got some wiggle. Auburn: Payton Thorne, he’s got some wiggle. Arkansas: KJ Jefferson, a load to bring down. Potentially a quarterback with some wiggle at Alabama depending on who starts. They’re gonna need him to play a serviceable role there to try and neutralize that. You feel much better going into those games with Harold Perkins than you would if you didn’t have him. He’s the answer for what they want to do offensively for what you do defensively.”
