Carolina Confidential: Weekend recruiting notes

Carolina Confidential – presented by Herring Insurance Services – is your home for South Carolina football and recruiting insight from Gamecock Central’s Wes Mitchell.

— Rock Hill (S.C.) class of 2025 four-star wide receiver Malik Clark, like many of Carolina’s targets, is currently planning to announce before his senior season begins and the tentative plan is for that decision to come as early as mid-July.

The four-star wide receiver has set official visits to South Carolina (May 31), North Carolina (June 7), and NC State (June 21), and for now that’s it. Florida State is pushing for an official visit but as of right now nothing is set up. Clark will reportedly take an unofficial visit to UGA on May 30 but he didn’t bring that up to me when we chatted on Thursday.

While I continue to hear the Gamecocks have ground to make up on North Carolina, I don’t believe that to be an insurmountable lead and it appears Mike Furrey has been chipping away. The first-year South Carolina receivers coach was at Rock Hill High School to meet with Clark on Tuesday and has done a good job of building a relationship with him. Clark also likes the idea of playing for the home state team and likes what the Gamecocks have done in terms of putting receivers in the league.

I get the impression the official visits will be important here and South Carolina will be first up next weekend.

— Fairburn (Ga.) Langston Hughes four-star interior offensive lineman Dontrell Glover announced this week that he’s set a South Carolina official visit for May 31 after setting a Top 4 of the Gamecocks, Florida State, Georgia, and Tennessee.

Even those who follow South Carolina recruiting closely might not have been familiar with Glover’s name when it popped up earlier this week and frankly it was sort of new to us too that Carolina is in the top group.

But this is a Carolina staff that isn’t scared to swing on top offensive line prospects and they’ve quietly entered the mix here. Florida State appears to be the perceived favorite online but the Gamecocks are going to take a swing with the official visit and see what happens.

“For me, every visit is important. I want to build strong relationships and see where I fit in at. The relationships and how I fit into the system are key when I commit,” Glover told On3 Director of Recruiting Chad Simmons.

Glover is the No. 283 overall prospect and No. 21 IOL in the 2025 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He’s also the No. 36 player in Georgia.

— Louisville (Ky.) Male’s three-star offensive lineman Isaac Sowells Jr. named his Top 5 on Friday and South Carolina, as expected, made the cut.

Sowells, who has been a camp warrior, taking home MVP honors as multiple stops this spring, has a top group that also includes Kentucky, Louisville, Miami, and NC State. He’s going to make his decision on July 18 after taking official visits to all five.

There’s been some NC State buzz here as our friends at The Wolfpacker have an RPM prediction in for the Wolfpack to land him but we’re also told the Gamecocks are firmly in it and there appears to be some confidence in Columbia. Sowells has been on campus multiple times.

Here’s what Sowells told On3 about South Carolina:

“Coach (Lonnie) Teasley, Coach (Sam) Serbay and Coach (Shane) Beamer they keep in constant contact with me and let me know Columbia, South Carolina would be a home for me. I talk to Josiah (Thompson), Blake (Franks) and Kam (Pringle) about why they felt South Carolina was home for them and how it could be for me. Columbia is a great town. They have a good business school. Those are two big things.”

— Alabaster (Ala.) Thompson class of 2027 quarterback Trent Seaborn is already a national level prospect at the position and he’s set to visit South Carolina on Friday after landing an offer from the Gamecocks this week.

I’m hoping we get to see Seaborn throw in person because there’s a camp that day.

The 6-foot-1 and 182-pound Seaborn threw for 2,601 and 27 touchdowns in 13 games as a freshman this past season. As an eight grader, Seaborn threw for 1,177 yards and 15 touchdowns in 10 games on the way to a 7A Alabama state title.
