Kentucky Recruiting Notebook: One Big Decision
Paducah (Ky.) Tilghman Martels Carter is unofficially ending his recruitment on Saturday. The top-200 prospect will announce his decision this weekend with Auburn and Kentucky emerging as the two finalists. The KSR team has had RPM predictions in for the Cats for a few months, and entering the decision Kentucky sits in a good spot.
Kentucky’s first defensive commitment in the 2025 recruiting cycle could be a big one. Martels Carter could become the fourth No. 1 player in Kentucky to sign with Kentucky in the last five years joining Jager Burton, Dane Key, and Jerod Smith III. The blue-chip prospect would give the Wildcats a potential building block in the secondary and could help open the floodgates.
The first big official visit weekend in Lexington will take place from June 7-9. In-state prospects Javeon Campbell and Isaac “Spike” Sowells Jr. will both be there. High-priority tackle prospect Darrin Strey will also be on campus that weekend along with multiple commitments. Getting Carter in the fold now could help build some steam for that significant recruiting weekend.
In our latest Recruiting Notebook at KSR+, we’re going to dive into some of the most recent developments on the trail for Kentucky but there is no hiding from the significance of Carter’s announcement this weekend.
Taren Hedrick locks in official visit with Kentucky
Darrin Strey and N-Kye Wynn will both be on campus for their official visits with Kentucky the June 7-9 weekend. Those Michigan natives appear to be Kentucky’s current top targets at tackle. However, we are seeing some other targets emerge.
Taren Hedick is a player to watch over the summer.
The high three-star recruit in South Florida has locked in an official visit with Kentucky at the end of June following trips to Ole Miss, Florida, Texas A&M, and Purdue. Eric Wolford has the Wildcats in the conversation as a very important month for Kentucky’s tackle recruiting is right around the corner.
Kentucky has some work to do in this recruitment, but Hedrick has stated that this is a wide-open race, and getting him on campus would at least give UK a fighting chance.
Another visit for Spike Sowells
Louisville (Ky.) Male senior Isaac “Spike” Sowells Jr. has been Kentucky’s top interior offensive line prospect for a while now, and his recruitment has not slowed down. The in-state recruit recently moved into the top-500 in the 2025 On3 Industry Ranking, and Kentucky is still giving the high-three start the full-court press.
On Thursday, Vince Marrow made another trip to Male to visit Sowells, and this time Eric Wolford tagged along. Kentucky has made Sowells a priority.
Now closing time is approaching while South Carolina, Miami, and NC State are all making big pushes to land Sowells. Once again, the June 7-9 official visit weekend will be a big one as Kentucky will attempt to wrap up one of their biggest remaining offensive targets.
Some wide receiver updates
As we addressed in a recent Big Board post at KSR+, there was a need for some more slot options to emerge after Kentucky lost four-star wideout Cameron Miller to Wisconsin. We immediately pointed out that Danville (Ky.) Boyle County wideout Montavin Quisenberry could emerge as an option and turn into a take for Kentucky football.
Guess who Vince Marrow visited on Friday?
Seneca Driver and Maddox Hager are both 2027 prospects at Boyle County that Kentucky has gotten involved with. In March, Kentucky hosted Quisenberry and multiple Boyle County players for an unofficial visit during spring practice. Now Kentucky is visiting with Quisenberry again.
Don’t be surprised if Kentucky makes a summer push for Quisenberry after the wide receiver prospect generated 1,664 scrimmage yards as a junior scoring 35 total touchdowns for the undefeated state champions.
That was not the only big wide receiver development this week. New wide receivers coach Daikiel Shorts Jr. has entered the Tar Heel State after three-star prospect Nasir Newkirk received a scholarship offer from Kentucky this week. The 6-foot-2 receiver will be someone to monitor over the next few months.
Some developments are happening at receiver and this is a position where Kentucky will likely look to add two more players to join Quintin Simmons as the Wildcats are now down to eight scholarship receivers and could see some heavy turnover in the offseason.
Andrew Purcell is getting some more attention
Enterprise (Ala.) High cornerback Andrew Purcell received a recent visit from Kentucky co-defensive coordinator Chris Collins and has stated that he has an official visit locked in with Kentucky along with Miami, Tennessee, and West Virginia.
But this recruitment is far from over.
Clemson and Georgia each issued scholarship offers for the high three-star recruit this week, and Ole Miss is also heavily involved. Kentucky is in a good roster situation at cornerback with eight scholarship players on the roster and most should return in 2025. That allows the coaching staff to become selective at cornerback, but Purcell has emerged as a top target.
Expect a rankings bump to potentially arrive at some point for the Alabama native as Kentucky will look to make a big impression in June for the defensive prospect.
