Recruiting Humidor: News on Texas QB commit KJ Lacey, new 2025 LB target, and five-star TE talks Texas
Inside Texas takes a closer look at the latest on Texas QB commit KJ Lacey, a new linebacker on the big board, and the nation’s top-rated 2026 tight end talks Longhorns in Friday’s recruiting humidor.
KJ Lacey, QB, Saraland (Ala.) – #AllGasNoBrakes
The 5-foot-11, 165-pound four-star Texas pledge has a busy month ahead of him. He has the On3 Elite Series event, 2024 Elite 11 quarterback camp, and his official visit to Texas over the next month.
After months of Lacey taking trips to schools like Auburn and Alabama, while being courted by Ole Miss and others, there was some cause for concern about his commitment to the UT class.
After speaking with sources this week, it appears Lacey is adamant he wants to be in Austin, playing for Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns.
Texas will continue to keep tabs on Duncanville (Texas) four-star QB, SMU commit Keelon Russell, who will join Lacey at the On3 Elite Series next week in Nashville.
Zaydrius Rainey-Sale, LB, Spanaway (Wa.) Bethel
Texas went up to the Pacific Northwest for its latest linebacker target for 2025. The Horns extended an offer to the 6-foot-2, 220-pound four-star and On3’s No. 10-rated LB on Thursday.
Rainey-Sale holds offers from Alabama, Oregon, Miami, Florida State, Oklahoma, and Penn State, and would go on to de-commit from Washington following the news of Alabama hiring U-Dub head coach Kalen DeBoer in February.
Alabama is thought to be in the lead, but a trip to Texas could be in the works. Since hiring linebacker coach Johnny Nansen, UT has been even more active on the West Coast with Nansen’s added ties to the region.
If Texas can get him on campus, this recruitment will become very relevant.
Kendre Harrison, TE, Reidsville (NC) – 2026
Texas recently offered the No. 1-rated tight end in the 2026 class in Harrison. The 6-foot-6, 255-pound five-star has 30+ offers and dreams of playing two sports at the next level.
Harrison was solid on the field last season, notching almost 1,000 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns in 2023. On the hardwood, he helped his squad go 29-0 and take home the state championship. Harrison, who also averages around 19 points and 15 rebounds per game, has already scored over 1,000 points and recorded more than 500 rebounds in his high school tenure.
His basketball offers include Georgetown, Florida State, NC State, and Texas A&M, but it’s a trip to Austin that could be in the works. By now, you know how UT tight end coach Jeff Banks rolls; he’ll shoot his shot and take his chance with all the top-rated TEs across the country and Harrison certainly qualifies in that regard.
