Shemy Schembechler ‘beyond honored to return home’ as Michigan assistant director of football recruiting

As TheWolverine.com‘s Chris Balas reported in recent weeks, Shemy Schembechler — son of legendary former Michigan Wolverines football coach Bo Schembechler — planned to join the U-M staff. Now, it’s official: the former Las Vegas Raiders scout is headed back to Ann Arbor as the Wolverines’ assistant director of football recruiting. He’s listed in the staff directory as an administrative specialist.

“I’m beyond honored to return home to [Michigan football]!” Schembechler said in a tweet. “Go blue always and forever!”

In his new role under head coach Jim Harbaugh, Schembechler will work with director of player personnel Tom Gamble, assistant director of player personnel Denard Robinson, recruiting operations coordinator Albert Karschnia, director of on-campus recruiting Christina DeRuyter and more support staffers.

Schembechler, who graduated from Miami University in 1992, was a scout for the Chicago Bears (1998-2000), Washington Redskins (2000-12), Seattle Seahawks (2012-13) and Las Vegas Raiders (2019-23). He also served as the director of strategic recruiting for TITLE Boxing Club (2014-15) and is the president and founder of GES Advisory Company, a “multiple services brand that revolves around consulting and motivational speaking for schools, business and high school football players and their families.”

A U-M graduate and former quarterback himself, Harbaugh has hired several staff members with deep Michigan ties in recent years, including Robinson, wide receivers coach Ron Bellamy, run game coordinator Mike Hart, defensive line coach Mike Elston, tight ends coach Grant Newsome, defensive analyst Doug Mallory and analyst Fred Jackson.

Bo Schembechler is the winningest head coach in Michigan football history (194-48-5). He delivered 13 Big Ten championships to Ann Arbor and was a six-time conference coach of the year. Schembechler was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1993.

Harbaugh actually babysat Shemy Schembechler in the 1970s, when his father, Jack Harbaugh, coached the secondary at Michigan. Shemy is involved in Harbaugh’s favorite “Bo story,” in which he told on the Rich Eisen Show.

Schembechler joins a Michigan program that has won back-to-back Big Ten championships and appeared in the last two College Football Playoffs. The Wolverines are seeking to win a third-straight outright Big Ten title for the first time in history. Michigan currently has the No. 5 recruiting class in the country for the 2024 class, according to the On3 Industry Ranking.
