LSU baseball is getting hot in Hoover at SEC Tournament
The LSU baseball team entered the SEC Tournament with hopes of winning the opener against Georgia given most analysts felt a victory would secure a spot in the NCAA Tournament.
24 hours later, the Tigers are not only in the NCAA Tournament, but LSU’s catching fire at the right time.
After knocking off No. 6 seed Georgia with a 9-1 win on Tuesday, the Tigers took the field for another 9:30 a.m. first pitch on Wednesday.
The opponent: No. 3 seed Kentucky.
The result: an 11-0 run-rule win on a day when pitching stepped up again and the bats delivered in a historic way.
One day after Gage Jump tossed 105 pitches across seven innings and allowed just one run, Luke Holman took the mound and threw 100 pitches, struck out seven batters and didn’t allow a hit or run in an 11-0 win over the Wildcats. Gavin Guidry closed out the game, allowing one hit and striking out three batters across two innings.
The work done from the mound was nearly flawless, and LSU found life at the plate, once again.
Jared Jones and Tommy White both hit a grand slams to shut the door on Kentucky. After scoring one run in the first inning and another run in the second inning, the teams went scoreless until LSU built on the 2-0 lead with a grand slam from Jones in the seventh inning. Up 7-0 in the 8th inning, White stepped to the plate and delivered another grand slam to put the Tigers up by the final score of 11-0.
LSU has been red-hot down the stretch, winning four of the program’s past five SEC series and posting a 10-5 mark over the final five weeks of the SEC slate. With SEC Tournament wins over Georgia and Kentucky, LSU is 17-5 over the past 22 games played.
The Tigers return to the field on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. CT to take on the winner of South Carolina vs. Arkansas in the program’s third game of the SEC Tournament. The game will be televised on the SEC Network, and it can be heard on the LSU Sports Radio Network affiliates.
