— South Carolina native and transfer portal EDGE Jatius Geer, who spent the last two seasons at Syracuse, announced a commitment to the Gamecocks Thursday, potentially filling a major need on the roster.

The 6-foot-6, 233-pounder emerged as a big-time pass-rusher for Syracuse as a redshirt freshman this past season, playing in all 13 games with 12 starts.

Geer finished the year with 33 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, six quarterback hurries, a forced fumble and a blocked kick.

Geer entered the transfer portal on April 26 with South Carolina quickly moving in to make him a priority.

— The news was not as positive in South Carolina’s search for a transfer portal running back when former Notre Dame back Logan Diggs committed to LSU on Tuesday and former N.C. State back Demie Sumo-Karngbe committed to Kentucky.

While the Gamecocks brought both in on official visits, Diggs was the target they prioritized of the two, though home state LSU was always going to be tough to beat for the Louisiana native.

— South Carolina added some resourceful help from the transfer portal on the offensive line as well with the addition of two preferred walk-ons, Jaxon Hughes and Ni Mansell.

Hughes started the last two seasons at left tackle for Charlotte, including the 49ers matchup with the Gamecocks in William-Brice Stadium.

Mansell has played at least 20 games for Mercer, where he was a guard.

— South Carolina hosted Virginia Beach (Va.) Green Run class of 2024 four-star wide receiver Keylen Adams on campus at the end of last week and he must have liked what the Gamecocks have to offer.

Gamecock fans may not be as familiar with Adams yet, but perhaps it’s time to start to get to know him, considering Carolina is now in the top five he released on Saturday. AlabamaOhio State, Pittsburgh, and Virginia Tech also made the cut.

Adams went in-depth on Saturday with On3’s Chad Simmons, including giving his thoughts on South Carolina.

“My trainer, when I was training with him, he went on a visit to South Carolina with somebody that he trains with and it was actually their best receiver, (Antwane Wells),” Adams said. “He showed me a video and I saw the stuff that he was having me do was the same stuff that he has him do… Then, he asked if I’ve ever been to South Carolina and I said no. He was saying how beautiful it was and how good the people there are. He then got me in contact with Juice (Wells) and then, Sept. 1 came and I started talking to coach Stepp. We basically talk every day.”

Adams has also set a commitment date of July 13.

— Picayune (Miss.) Picayune Memorial four-star linebacker Jamonta Waller released his Top 10 last week with South Carolina making the cut.

Penn State, Florida, Georgia, Auburn, Texas A&M, Alabama, Tennessee, Ole Miss, and Mississippi State rounded out that top group.

Waller told On3’s Chad Simmons that Carolina was one of a few schools in the running for his fifth official visit.

— It comes as no surprise that the Gamecocks are finalists for Salem (Va.) four-star running back Peyton Lewis, who has cut his list of schools down to six. Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Penn State, and Tennessee also made his list.

The 6-foot-1, 190-pounder previously told Gamecock Central that South Carolina and Tennessee are his Top 2 schools.

Lewis is the No. 171 overall prospect and No. 11 running back in the 2024 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He is also the No. 1 player in Virginia.
