SEC baseball tournament hasn’t been kind to South Carolina
It’s not just a Hoover, Ala. thing. Historically, for whatever reason, South Carolina just hits a wall when it comes to the SEC baseball tournament.
Since joining the Southeastern Conference in 1992, South Carolina has appeared in the SEC baseball tournament 30 times. Including the years when the conference would hold separate tournaments for the Eastern and Western Divisions, USC is 30-53. Only Missouri has a worse SEC tournament winning percentage than the Gamecocks. Missouri is also just one of three active SEC teams to have never won the SEC tournament, with Georgia and Kentucky being the other two. Texas A&M has only appeared in the tournament nine times and yet they have a better winning percentage than USC and have also won the same amount of SEC tournaments.

It’s remarkable that a program who has been to the NCAA tournament 34 times, won 19 regionals, have had 11 College World series appearances, and have won two national titles have struggled to find consistent success in the conference tournament. USC’s lone SEC tournament title was won in 2004.
We know the SEC is tough, but sorry, that’s not an excuse. Not for a program who even with their hiccups in recent years still has one of the richest traditions in all of college baseball.

Vanderbilt, Ole Miss, and Tennessee have all appeared in the SEC baseball tournament less than USC. However, each of those teams have won the tournament at least three times. Auburn has won the tournament three times despite appearing in it same amount of times at the Gamecocks.
South Carolina will look to put their SEC tournament woes behind them when they begin their run on Tuesday against Alabama. The Gamecocks enter the tournament (33-21) overall and finished the season (13-17) in the SEC.
