Florida Gators football roster breakdown: Receiver

Florida Gators football roster breakdown: Receiver

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The Florida Gators‘ passing offense was ninth in the SEC last season. With three of Florida’s top four receivers from last season gone and a new quarterback at the helm, what does that mean for the passing game?

“I tell you what I really like the guys, just going through the different guys, they’ve got great work ethic. There’s length, there’s quickness, there’s size,” Billy Gonzales said. “I’m fired up to have the opportunity to coach them. Everybody’s a little different, everybody’s a little unique in what they bring but as far as them learning, they’ve done a great job here.

The Gators’ receivers room lost leading catcher Xzavier Henderson (38 receptions), as well as Daejon Reynolds (transfer portal), and Justin Shorter (NFL). The room has some young rising talent and one proven threat. Can this group help Florida’s passing game keep defenses honest as Florida looks to pound the rock in 2023?

Analysis

Ricky Pearsall led the Gators in receiving yards in 2022. He’s a true NFL prospect and should lead the Gators again in yards and catches. Pearsall brought a dynamic inside that Florida didn’t have on its roster. He continued to be unguardable throughout the spring and is poised for a great season.

We’re entering prove-it territory with Ja’Quavion Fraziars. He has 11 receptions in three seasons. Has it just been a lack of opportunity or will he be passed up by younger players?

Marcus Burke and Caleb Douglas both had productive springs. Florida felt really good about the strides both of these younger receivers made in camp.

The most talented part of this room (outside of Pearsall) is the freshmen. Andy Jean came in polished and with a work ethic that you would like to see every player have. The Miami native lives in the facility. Aidan Mizell is a burner. He has true track speed and showed that off in the spring game. The one we haven’t seen in person may be the one most ready to play.

Eugene Wilson was one of the best receivers in the state of Florida last recruiting cycle. Wilson should be able to make an impact right when he steps on campus. He would have been a contender to earn a starting job if not for Pearsall returning to school. Wilson is a playmaker. He’ll make an impact on special teams and he’s the type of player you scheme around on offense. Get the ball in his hands and let him go to work.
