The latest recruiting intel with Kentucky transfer Ugonna Onyenso after NBA Draft Combine week
Ugonna Onyenso entered the college basketball Transfer Portal in early April. He immediately became one of the top rim protectors available. Onyenso, listed as a 7-foot-0 sophomore at Kentucky, led the SEC with 2.8 blocks per game and a 15.3 block percentage, despite playing only 18.8 minutes per contest.
Onyenso’s 66 total blocks finished third in the league, even with playing in only 24 of his team’s 33 games. Onyenso has established himself as one of the premier shot blockers in college basketball.
Immediately after going into the portal Oklahoma, UNC, Louisville, Mississippi State, Alabama, and Georgetown were the programs I heard involved with Onyenso. The former On3 five-star has stayed in the NBA Draft process. He participated in this week’s G-League Combine and held his pro day on Thursday.
With Onyenso not getting an invite to the NBA Draft Combine, sources close to the recruitment tell me they expect him to return to school. The process has shifted in the month and a half since entering the Transfer Portal so let’s discuss the intel and where things stand.
Ugonna Onyenso Intel
While the six schools mentioned above (Oklahoma, UNC, Louisville, Mississippi State, Alabama, and Georgetown) were the schools involved early, the process quickly had all eyes on Alabama. Sources close to the recruitment maintained both sides had a mutual interest. Rutgers transfer Cliff Omoruyi committed to Alabama and a source close to the recruitment said that opened things back up for Onyenso.
While I am told Alabama is still recruiting Onyenso, sources tell me the direction pointed toward Louisville and UNC. I am told that each of these programs are still involved with the 7-foot-0 center.
Now that NBA Draft Combine week and Onyenso’s Pro Day are complete, sources tell me to expect this recruitment to move somewhat quickly.
Another program I am told to watch out for is Kansas State. Sources close to the recruitment told me that the Wildcats heavily expressed their interest in Onyenso later in the week. Another source close to the recruitment tells me they expect this to come down to Kansas State and UNC.
Sources tell me that Louisville, Alabama, Kansas State, and UNC should be considered the final four schools. I am told a visit to UNC could come as soon as this weekend. It is worth watching to see if he sets a visit to Kansas State.
As things stand, I would give the slight edge to UNC, but Kansas State is making a push. Watch how things move over the next few days as things could move quickly.
Stay tuned to On3 as portal news moves quickly. Keep up with all the latest recruiting and breaking news.
