Miami Hurricanes 50-1 Countdown: Ranking the top 50 post-spring players … No. 45 Ny Carr

The Miami Hurricanes have massively reshaped the roster from a year ago with five primary offensive starters gone (QB Tyler Van Dyke, RB Henry Parrish, WR Colbie Young, OL Javion Cohen and Matt Lee) along with seven on the defensive side (DT Leonard Taylor, DT Branson Deen,  DL Jared Harrison-Hunte, S Kam Kinchens, S James Williams, CB Jaden Davis and CB Te’Cory Couch).

Which brings us to our annual series breaking down the top 50 players on the current roster. As we go along on this list you’ll get an idea of the overall depth of talent on Mario Cristobal’s team this year as he seeks Miami’s second 10-win season in the last two decades.

Today we are at No. 45:

NO. 45 WR NY CARR

Why He’s No. 45

Carr perhaps was a bit overshadowed by highly touted true freshman receiver teammate JoJo Trader this spring, but don’t let that deceive you: Carr very much displayed his playmaking skills, to the point we would not be surprised to see him get meaningful offensive reps in Year 1 while also helping on special teams. At 6-0 and 175 pounds, Carr has a speed element to his game (Mario Cristobal said this spring Carr’s GPS numbers are “through the roof”) with route running and hands also a forte. The consensus four-star prospect out of Moultrie, Ga. has a very bright future ahead. He showcased his production as a senior with 1,261 yards and 21 TDs, so don’t sleep on him. This Miami team will play its best receivers and with a strong summer Carr should be right up there on the two-deep and pushing for first-team reps.

What he needs to do to move up this list

Experience is obviously a factor that is going to hold Carr back. It’s a big transition dealing with the bigger, faster cornerbacks at this level. Consistency and earning trust of the coaches are also going to be ultra-important if he’s going to be able to have a positive impact as a true freshman.

Realistic season objective

Most see the top four receivers on the team as Xavier Restrepo, Jacolby George, Sam Brown and Isaiah Horton, and perhaps the next two after them would be JoJo Trader and Ray Ray Joseph. But, again, don’t sleep on Carr. He showed some really good things this spring and with a solid summer he could be one of those surprise guys that emerges in fall camp and shows you’ve got to get the ball in his hands in some capacity in games. For now, though, we’re going to set his freshman bar somewhere in the range of 200-300 receiving yards and finding the end zone a couple of times.
