Former Ohio State forward Seth Towns enters transfer portal

Former Ohio State forward Seth Towns, who has played just one season of college basketball since 2018 and stepped away from the game last year, entered the transfer portal Monday evening.

Towns, remarkably, still has two years of eligibility remaining despite starting his career in 2016 at Harvard, where he won Ivy League Player of the Year during the 2017-18 season.

The former Northland High School star put up great numbers with the Crimson, scoring in double figures both years he was healthy in Cambridge. His sophomore stat line included 16.0 points (18.6 in Ivy League play) and 5.7 rebounds per game as well as a 44.1% clip from deep and a 80.5% free throw percentage.

A familiar name entered the portal earlier this evening, per source: Seth Towns. Hasn’t played since 2020-21 season with Ohio State, has missed three entire seasons with knee and back injuries over course of his career. First played college hoops in 2016 at Harvard. 2018 Ivy POY.

Then came the onslaught of injury complications.

The 6-foot-9, 230-pound forward missed the next two seasons at Harvard with knee issues. Looking to get back on the court and use his final years of eligibility, he returned home to Columbus and joined Ohio State. He played in 25 games for the Buckeyes during the 2020-21 season. That year, he averaged 10.8 minutes, 3.8 points and 2.2 rebounds per contest while contributing 15 makes from beyond the arc at a 34.1% 3-point percentage.

Towns finished in double figures against Big Ten foes five times that season, even chipping in 11 points amid an overtime win against Purdue in the Big Ten Tournament. But those Buckeyes fell just short of a Big Ten Tournament title and were upset by 15th-seeded Oral Roberts in the NCAA Tournament.

Towns missed the entire 2021-22 season after undergoing preseason back surgery. Just about two months before the start of last season, Towns announced that he was “stepping away” from the program, following what he described as summer setbacks and “tough conversations” with coaches and medical personnel.

That freed up a scholarship spot for Ohio State, which it eventually awarded midseason to Owen Spencer, who joined the team as a transfer from The Citadel and a preferred walk-on ahead of the 2022-23 season.

Towns, meanwhile, is presented with a unique opportunity. At 25 years old, he still has two years of college eligibility left, and it appears as if he’s going to try to make the most of them.

What we know about Ohio State’s 2023-24 schedule so far

Although the complete 2023-24 Ohio State schedule hasn’t been released, we have gotten bits and pieces of the upcoming season’s calendar over the last month.

Lettermen Row is putting those together to provide an overview of what we know about the opponents the Buckeyes will be facing during an all-important seventh year of the Chris Holtmann era.

Perhaps most notably, Ohio State will be hosting Texas A&M on Nov. 10, four days after the season opener. Keep in mind, the Buckeyes didn’t have a non-conference home game against a Power Five foe last year.

Kickoff times announced for Michigan, Michigan State games

The 2023 Ohio State football season is still more than 100 days away, but it feels like it’s getting closer — especially after a pair of critical kickoff times were announced Monday.

Details were revealed for the Buckeyes’ Nov. 11 home game against Michigan State and their Nov. 25 road showdown at Michigan.

To find out when those games are kicking off and which network is set to broadcast each, go here (Michigan State game details) and here (Michigan game details).
