The latest buzz on Kentucky transfer center Ugonna Onyenso
Ugonna Onyenso is the top-available center left in the transfer, making him a high priority for many college programs. The 7-foot sophomore spent the last two seasons playing for John Calipari at Kentucky. This year, Onyenso averaged 3.6 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. The big man particularly excels at protecting the rim, as he averaged 2.8 blocks.
Something to keep in mind is that while Onyenso is in the transfer portal, he is also going through the NBA Draft process. There is significant upside for the big man who was a five-star recruit for On3 coming out of high school.
Let’s dive into the latest recruiting buzz for Onyenso.
Latest recruiting chatter on Onyenso
Earlier this month, multiple sources indicated that Onyenso’s recruitment was trending towards Alabama, causing me to place a prediction in favor of Nate Oats and the Crimson Tide.
However, with Alabama’s addition of Rutgers transfer center Clifford Omouryi, that significantly altered things with Onyenso. I was told that after Omouryi picked Alabama, Onyenso began to look for other schools to see who else would be interested. With that being said, I no longer believe that Alabama is the leader here.
Based on information I have gathered from multiple sources, two schools that I view as legitimate threats here are Louisville and North Carolina.
The Cards’ are motivated and are in need of an elite big man. Pat Kelsey is also on a roll on the recruiting trail.
UNC is also in need of a big man after losing Armando Bacot and Onyenso would likely play a signifcant role for Hubert Davis in Chapel Hill.
I’m also told that Oklahoma and Mississippi State are two additional programs that would love to add him, but from what I have gathered, Louisville and UNC have stronger chances of landing him.
With all that being said, I’m currently giving the edge to North Carolina.
Onyenso could also still leave his name in the Draft, and if there is one thing that I have learned this transfer portal season — recruitments can change quickly.
