Florida emerging as the program to watch for former five-star recruit and Colorado transfer Cormani McClain

Florida emerging as the program to watch for former five-star recruit and Colorado transfer Cormani McClain

Florida is emerging as the likely next school for former Colorado cornerback Cormani McClain, who entered the NCAA Transfer Portal in April.

A former On3 Industry five-star recruit, McClain visited Florida last Friday where he spent a lot of time with head coach Billy Napier.

Napier and the Gators coveted McClain as a potential member of the 2023 class, so the two reconnected in person this past week.

As On3’s Pete Nakos reported, McClain will be back at Florida on Tuesday. Among other things, he will spend time with the players on the team. Many of those guys McClain already knows.

If all goes well with that, it’s setting up nicely on all fronts for McClain to be a Gator.

The On3 Industry Rankings tabbed McClain as the No. 1 cornerback in the 2023 class and No. 13 prospect overall. He gave Miami his verbal in October of 2022, choosing the Hurricanes over the Gators. Then in surprise fashion he elected not to put pen to paper with the Hurricanes during the three-day Early Signing Period that December. Ultimately he locked in with Deion Sanders and Colorado in February.

After one season and before the end of the most recent spring football camp, McClain entered the NCAA Transfer Portal. He played in nine games as a true freshman, finishing with 13 total tackles, six solo tackles, one tackle for loss and two pass deflections.

“I’m always in prayer for young men, and I want the best for them,” Sanders told DNVR. “And I pray to God that he goes to a program that challenges him as well as holds him accountable and develops him as a young man. Unfortunately, we weren’t the program that could accomplish that.

“So prayerfully that he understands that this is his second go-around and get it. Go get it, man. Because he has a tremendous amount of talent, but he has to want it.”

The On3 Industry ranks McClain as the No. 2 cornerback in the NCAA Transfer Portal and No. 22 prospect overall.
