Tennessee athletics head coaches Rick Barnes, Kim Caldwell and Josh Heupel, along with Athletics Director Danny White, have made their way around the state of Tennessee on the Big orange Caravan. What are some of the highlights from their stops?
What’s going on in the world of recruiting for Josh Heupel and who is set to be back in at the end of May and in the month of June for official visits?
The crew of Brent Hubbs, Austin Price, Rob Lewis and Grant Ramey answer plenty of these questions and more on this week’s edition of the Volquest Mailbag Podcast. Tennessee Questions on the Mailbag Podcast
1:33 Ubervol — ZZ has another year of eligibility left after this upcoming season, correct? Think he takes it?
2:40 Lfvol — Given graduation and expected transfer outs post 2024, does the recent thinking that we get only 3 WRs reflect our low probability with elites beyond Smith?
2:57 While Brent’s podcast hypothetical tiered employee scenario might simplify the university side, doesn’t it ignore outside NIL opportunities which legally cannot be restricted?
12:21 CMD — Not complaining one bit about our offensive production over the last 3 years, but why do you feel that CJH has been so screen averse? Seems as if we hardly ever run them.
14:56 Vol_I_Am — Who is the most important recruit for the football staff to lock up here in the next 1-2 months
18:28 MarketSquareStreaker — What types of changes/accommodations in Lindsay Nelson will there be for Regionals/Super Regionals? Ex. More seating/restrooms? Also, any talk of block party outside the stadium during that time?
20:25 Andrew Akens — If Tennessee was a farm team for the NFL, what draft grade would you give the guys that are likely to leave next year and who are the guys that will eventually get there?
27:46 The ADaug — Which SEC coaches do you think are on the hot seat this season? Which SEC coaches do you think are most likely to make a move after this season?
33:24 Gbmfo — Everyone seems to rave over Boo Carter and expect him to have a big impact this year. Why doesn’t the staff just start him day 1 instead of Jourdan Thomas. You would think that would only help his development.
34:23 Zvols — O/u 5.5 defenders with 6+ TFLs next year. In 2023, 4 reached that threshold. They were Pearce, Baron, Beasley, and Norman Lott. Likely candidates in 2024 are Pearce, West, Thomas, Norman Lott, Eason, Josephs, Pili, Carter, Telander, and Jourdan Thomas.
36:23 Volstar88 — It looks like Peyton Lewis is going to be a great RB for us. I think he could make a big impact as a freshman. Do we know when he will be healthy enough to practice with the team when summer practice begins? Will he be ready by game 1?
37:18 Pine — Georgia goes undefeated Ole Miss, Texas and UT all are 10 win teams. Would you rather play UGA in the SEC Championship game and the loser gets no bye and plays a road game in the playoffs OR UT gets a bye by not playing in the SEC championship and gets a home playoff game?
39:10 Athrun — There has been so much talk about Offensive Tackle Recruiting this cycle. How many Interior Offensive linemen are we taking in this class? both Guards and Center position.
40:11 — Have we nailed down who are main RB targets are in Recruiting yet to this point?
40:36 — 3 spots left in Basketball, let’s assume Lanier takes one if available. does rick leave them the last two scholarships open, take 1 HS kid that he finds like ZZ and Tobe or do you think Rick will try to find 2 like ZZ and Tobe?
42:57 Dale1972 — One of the issues that causes a lot of portal activity that nobody talks about is the 85 scholarship limit. You are always going to have massive moments when you have a 85 scholarship limit. I believe college football could reduce the number of scholarships to 70. If you need practice players you can backfill with walk-ons.
44:46 KbUSMCa5 — IMHO I think with the talent at WR, I think Tennessee will incorporate certain packages in different situations. For example, I see them going big physical groupings in the red zone this year (Thornton/Brazzell outside with McCoy / TE inside) for critical mismatches. Thoughts?
46:01 Dekalbcountyvol — Tony V and Josh Heupel both inherited rosters and teams who weren’t ready to win championships when they arrived. They both flipped that script seemingly in a couple seasons. They are polar opposites or it seems that they are. What differences and similarities do they have that makes them both successful?
49:32 Volken — What are some of you guys best stories of recruitments that didn’t happen because the initial interaction between staff & player went REALLY crazy? Any sport.
