Gators working to become a contender with in-state DL Derry Norris
PORT ORANGE, FLORIDA — Florida defensive line coach Gerald Chatman is making a good impression on 3-star target Derry Norris of Spruce Creek High, but it remains to be seen if the Gators will emerge as a major factor in Norris’ recruitment..
First things first, they’re trying to secure an official visit.
And …
“It’s definitely possible,” Norris told Gators Online. “It’s 55-45.”
According to Norris, who said this week he is 6-foot-4 and 270 pounds, two dates are being looked at as possible official visit weekends with Florida — June 14 and June 21. He currently has an official to Minnesota scheduled for June 14.
Derry Norris will make multiple official visits
Additional officials are set for Georgia Tech (May 31) and Miami (June 7). Meanwhile, Texas, like Florida, is angling for one also and it appears the Longhorns have emerged as a legit contender for Norris.
Norris admittedly is a little torn at the moment about his officials because he feels a sense of loyalty to the schools that were on him early.
“I don’t want to tarnish any relationships that I have right now,” he said. “I just have to weigh all my options.”
Chatman visited Norris, who will play the 3-technique defensive line position in college, at Spruce Creek last week.
“He’s a great guy and the communication has been great,” Norris said. “We’ve been conversing back and forth ever since he got there so it’s been pretty good. They’ve come in on me pretty strong now. They like my development from my sophomore year up until now. They’ve been recruiting me from the head coach all the way down to the position coaches. They hit me up almost every other day.”
Norris has made two previous visits to Gainesville. He attended a game there last season and returned for a junior day.
“It’s a great place,” he said. “I really like the development and the history of the place — and the great legends that have come through there and how much they develop kids.”
He should know in “two to three weeks” if the Gators will get an official visit. If he officials to Florida, he’ll wants to explore what it’s like to be a Florida player both on and off the field.
“How my life is going to be,” Norris told Gators Online.
A commitment decision could come by “mid-summer,” Norris said.
