Four quick takes from No.1 Tennessee’s midweek victory over Queens

Four quick takes from No.1 Tennessee’s midweek victory over Queens

After a sluggish start, newly minted No.1 Tennessee found a late surge to defeat Queens of Charlotte on Tuesday night. Tony Vitello’s team overcame some early adversity and got some work for multiple guys down the stretch. Volquest shares four quick takes from the 6-3 midweek victory.

Loy looks the part

Dylan Loy came on in relief during the first inning after an underwhelming performance from starter Marcu Phillips. Phillips plunked a batter, threw a wild pitch and walked three batters in just 20 pitches to let two runs score. Loy was left in a jam, but he came in and went right to work. From my vantage point, it is safe to say he earned some trust heading into the postseason. Loy pitched 3.1 innings, struck out five and gave up just two hits.

Bargo sparks rally to lift the Vols to victory

Tony Vitello called on Dalton Bargo to pinch-hit for Charles Taylor in the sixth inning, and he delivered a single that sparked the Vols in a four-run seventh inning. He remained on in relief of Taylor as a catcher which signaled his first opportunity to catch for the Vols in live action. Bargo showed promise during his time behind the place, and it was good for him to get a couple of innings of work behind Taylor.

Dylan Dreiling was clutch when it mattered the most on Tuesday night

With one swing of the bat, Queens saw Tennessee double their output and jump out to a 6-3 lead. Dreiling got the pitch he was looking for with two outs, and he hammered the ball over the right-centerfield fence. Dreiling’s homer flew 385 feet with a 106mph exit velocity.

Aaron Combs slams the door on a late rally attempt

Vitello went to Combs with the bases loaded and only one out with the Royals having their best stick at the plate. Combs struck out Dillon Lewis, then The pressure situation was another good opportunity for Combs to get in some quality work against a solid hitter ahead of post-season play.
