Local program Houston is up against SEC programs for WR Ja’Kayden Ferguson

Local program Houston is up against SEC programs for WR Ja’Kayden Ferguson

Houston Fort Bend Marshall wide receiver Ja’Kayden Ferguson wants to go into his senior season committed. He is high on the Cougars, the school just 30 minutes from home, but the local program has some company.

Ferguson has scheduled an official visit with Arkansas for June 14. He is talking with Alabama, Kentucky and LSU about dates as well. Tennessee is another SEC school the three-star is thinking about taking an official visit to.

“If I had to commit tomorrow, it would be Arkansas or LSU,” Ferguson told On3. “I know I don’t have to commit right now and I have more time, so I am going to take some visits, then commit this summer.”

Arkansas and LSU have sent coaches out to check on Ferguson already this spring.

“I have a great relationship with Coach Ronnie Fouch at Arkansas. He texted me every day, we are cool and I have to get out there to check them out.

“Coach Corey Raymond and Coach Blake Baker were at my practice the other day. Coach Raymond talked to me after practice and offered me. He liked me as a cornerback and I should visit LSU for the first time in a couple of weeks, then take an official visit in June. I always liked LSU growing up. I watched Odell Beckham play and that is where my interest in LSU started.”

Houston will get Ferguson back on campus on June 21 for an official visit. He has been there too many times to count.

“The Houston staff is the one I know the best. I know the offensive and defensive coaches there. Being from Houston, if I went there, I could be that hometown hero. They say that to me a lot and they recruit me hard all the time.”

Alabama, Kentucky and Tennessee are strong contenders too.

“I have visited Alabama and it was great. I was there on March 22 and I got to sit in on meetings and spend time with Coach JaMarcus Shephard. They offered on that visit and we have been talking a lot since. Coach Shepard has crazy energy and he is a coach that guys would run through a wall for.

“With Kentucky, it is about Coach Daikiel Shorts. He was at Houston and we have that connection. I have to give Kentucky a look because of Coach Shorts.

“I was at Tennessee for a game last season and it was great. Coach Kelsey Pope is young, he has energy and we have been talking about an official visit. I like him a lot.”

Ferguson said relationships and scheme are important to him. LSU is the only school to offer him strictly as a cornerback. Most schools like him as a wide receiver, but some have mentioned athlete.
