Inside the commitment: Rodney Colton
Newnan (Ga.) class of 2026 four-star linebacker Rodney Colton announced a surprise commitment to South Carolina last week after landing an offer from the Gamecocks while he was on campus for the spring game.
Delayed but not forgotten — and after gathering additional info on Colton — below we take a look at several aspects of this addition to the program, exclusively for GamecockCentral subscribers.
The recruitment
In late March, Colton named a Top 2 of Auburn and Georgia but that declaration came before he had an offer from South Carolina.
Interestingly enough, the Peach State native told GamecockCentral he actually grew up watching guys like Jaycee Horn and Cam Smith when he was younger and has continued to watch Gamecock players in the years after, including current linebacker Debo Williams.
A student of the game, Colton likes to study the technique of other players and insert aspects into his own game, so with that familiarity with the program, he highly coveted an offer from South Carolina.
Colton landed that offer while he was in town for the spring game and felt like he was a perfect fit for the program on and off the field.
It’s worth pointing out that Colton is a class of 2026 prospect, so it’s still early, and Georgia and Auburn aren’t likely to stop pushing. But given how much Colton wanted the offer in the first place, there’s plenty of reason to believe this early commitment could stick, despite the Bulldogs always being tough to beat in state.
Additionally, I’m told that Colton wanted to commit on the Saturday of the spring game when he first landed the offer but the staff encouraged him to sleep on it and make sure he was truly ready before making his commitment. A few days later, he did so.
The evaluation
The 6-foot-1, 205-pounder is On3’s No. 2 linebacker in the entire 2026 class, which speaks to the upside here.
Colton was described to me as a true sideline-to-sideline linebacker who has the athleticism to play in space but is also a bruiser who punishes ball carriers.
He plays sort of a SAM/nickel role quite a bit, it appears on film, so he’s used to playing out in space and probably profiles as a WILL linebacker at the next level in the Gamecocks scheme. But his versatility is one thing he told us that the staff likes about him.
In addition to being the No. 2 LB, Colton is ranked the No. 34 overall prospect and No. 5 prospect in Georgia by On3.
The industry as a whole is high on him but not quite as high as On3 with the Industry Ranking considering him the No. 83 overall prospect and No. 8 LB in the class.
Colton dealt with some injuries last season as a sophomore that slowed his overall progress a bit but some thought that he had the potential to be the best linebacker in the class prior to that, so there could be an opportunity for upward mobility here in his industry ranking.
What’s next?
South Carolina’s two-man 2026 class is off to a great start with four-star QB Landon Duckworth to go along with Colton. As out-of-state Blue Chippers, South Carolina will keep recruiting both prospects hard, as if they were uncommitted.
From a 2026 standpoint, it’s far too early to know who the Gamecocks might be able to pair with Colton but overall it’s easy for fans to get excited about the potential of the group Clayton White is building.
True freshmen Wendell Gregory and JayR Johnson have turned heads already and Carolina will host a handful of class of 2025 linebackers on campus for official visits this summer. None of those bigger than five-star target Zayden Walker, of whom they’re battling with Georgia to land.
