Top-80 S Eric Winters talks Miami, why Hurricanes are contending

Enterprise (Ala.) four-star safety Eric Winters isn’t ready to announce a decision just yet, but with his official visits on the horizon, the top-80 prospect believes Miami is continuing to climb.

The No. 79 prospect and No. 9 safety in the 2025 class named Miami in his top five schools April 19 along with Georgia, Auburn, Florida and Tennessee and believes the Hurricanes will have a chance for him this summer, although he said he currently feels Georgia and Auburn are “a little closer to the top” and Miami can still improve its position.

The Hurricanes have continued to climb for Winters since his spring unofficial visit to Coral Gables and have developed a closer relationship with the 6-foot-2, 195-pound prospect, he said, although Miami is the lone school in his top five recruiting him at Sam and Will linebacker.

“Really, from what I took away from my last visit, they’re relationship-driven people,” Winters said. “That’s really what you’re looking for in a school: a family environment and a place you can go away from home for the next three or four years and be comfortable with.”

Winters said he feels comfortable playing anywhere on a defense and wouldn’t have a problem moving from safety to linebacker, although most other schools are recruiting him as a traditional safety or Star. Miami linebackers coach Derek Nicholson and head coach Mario Cristobal have both been involved in his recruitment since his spring visit and have steadily developed a strong connection with the four-star prospect. Secondary coach Chevis Jackson has also been involved.

“There message to me is I can come to Miami and become a better athlete, but I can also become a better young man and a better person overall in life,” Winters said. “What everybody in that room is telling me is `Enterprise to The U.’”

Winters is currently working to reschedule his June 21 official visit to May 31 to visit alongside Enterprise teammates Zion Grady (a four-star EDGE recently RPM’d to Miami) and Andrew Purcell (a three-star cornerback Miami is continuing to battle schools like Ole Miss, Auburn and Florida for). Winters said the trio talks about Miami “all the time” and believe Cristobal has the program trending in a positive direction.

Winters hasn’t set a date for his decision and believes he’ll announce a commitment when the moment feels right.

Miami has some work to do to catch up to Auburn and Georgia, but the Hurricanes can make up a significant amount of ground on his official visit. I’m expecting the vibes to be particularly high following his trip to Coral Gables the first weekend of June.
