Highly-ranked San Jose State CB transfer, Jayvion Cole, set to visit Michigan State
East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State’s activity in the football transfer portal continues to expand with the Spartans set to get a visit from one of the highest-rated transfer cornerback prospects in the country.
The Spartans will receive a visit from San Jose State University cornerback Jayvion Cole during the weekend of May 11-13. Cole confirmed with SpartanMag that he will visit Michigan State after a visit to the University of Texas, which will begin on Thursday.
Cole (6-1, 170) is ranked the No. 34 player in the transfer portal, according to the On3 Industry Transfer Portal Rankings. He is the No. 7 cornerback in the transfer portal, and the No. 3 player from a Group of Five conference in the On3 Industry Transfer Portal Rankings.
Cole, a native of Oakland, Calif., attended Oakland McClymonds High School, graduating in 2022 – two years after Edward Woods, a cornerback transfer from Arizona State who is currently visiting Michigan State.
Cole has played two seasons of college football. He started his college career in the FCS in the Big Sky Conference at Cal Poly. He had 20 tackles in 11 games as well as a team-high four interceptions his freshman season at Cal Poly.
He transferred up to the FBS level, to San Jose State in the Mountain West Conference for his sophomore year. Cole had 10 pass break-ups with three interceptions, three tackles for loss, one sack and 38 tackles for San Jose State in 2023. Cole’s 10 pass break-ups was good for second most in the Mountain West and 14th in the country.
Cole was named All-Mountain West Honorable Mention. He has a 94.00 rating according to the On3 college rating, which makes him a four-star transfer prospect.
Last season San Jose State played host to Oregon State in week two of the season. Woods recorded his first career sack against the Jonathan Smith-coached Beavers in that game. He also tied a career-high four tackles and had a pass breakup in the game.
Michigan State cornerbacks coach Demetrice Martin is the point man for the recruitments of Cole and Woods. Martin is a California native who played at Michigan State in the early-to-mid-1990s. He joined Smith’s coaching staff at Michigan State during the winter.
Martin stated a few weeks ago he feels like his connection to the West Coast will help him in recruiting prospects from that area.
“Being a West Coast guy that went to school here, now coaching here, it brings a little bit of added ‘Hey, it’s ok to leave home from momma and come out here and ball out,’” Martin said.
Martin stated on April 18, that he was happy with Michigan State’s cornerbacks room, but he also said they were going to use the transfer portal as needed.
“This group is eager, they’re willing to work and they want to be really good so I’m happy with the situation that we’re in,” Martin said of Michigan State’s cornerbacks. “But obviously, like every program that there is in the nation, we’re going to look to enhance the room always. But the guys we have here right now are working their tails off and they’re getting better.”
Michigan State returns Charles Brantley, Dillon Tatum and Chance Rucker as the experienced cornerbacks. Tatum moved to safety during the spring.
Woods will decide between Michigan State and Alabama, which he visited over the weekend before heading to Michigan State.
