The latest on Rhode Island transfer Antonio Carter

The latest on Rhode Island transfer Antonio Carter

With several Power 5 programs — notably the Florida Gators — pursuing Rhode Island safety transfer Antonio Carter, here’s the latest on his recruitment:

-He officially visited Notre Dame on Wednesday-Friday.

-Next, he will official to LSU. That begins Friday and he’ll spend two nights in Baton Rouge, La.

-The LSU official will wrap up Sunday and Carter will fly to Gainesville for his Gators official.

-Officials to Iowa, Kentucky and Texas A&M were canceled.

-On the one hand, some don’t think distance will be an issue in Cater’s recruitment. But from talking to various people, it sounds like at least one of the other programs involved is leery of the fact he’s from Orlando and attended Oak Ridge High. For that reason, the Gators probably are viewed as the favorite at this time. But the official visits are expected to be key.

Last week, Carter told On3’s Matt Zenitzs this about the Gators: “Florida’s been my dream school growing up and then they’ve had a history of putting out DBs. They’re going through their struggles right now, but they’ve always been a really good program.”

-The 6-foot-1, 200-pound Carter already made visits to both Ole Miss and Wisconsin.

-As previously reported by Zach Abolverdi of Gators Online, Carter hopes to make a decision around May 20.

In 2022, Carter started all 11 games for Rhode Island, finishing fourth on the team in tackles with 60 in addition to 4.5 tackles for loss, one sack, one interception and 10 pass breakups.

According to the On3 Transfer Portal rankings, Carter is a 3-star prospect and the 10th best prospect available. He is ranked behind UAB transfer Jaylen Key as the No. 2 best available safety in the transfer portal. Alabama and Florida State are the favorites for Key.

At Oak Ridge High, Carter earned second-team All-Metro honors in 2018. His offer list out of high school also included Wagner, Fordham, and Gardner-Webb.
