Local 4-star RB feeling the love from the Miami Hurricanes: “The vibe on campus is like I’m home”

Local 4-star RB feeling the love from the Miami Hurricanes: “The vibe on campus is like I’m home”

While spring ball may be in the rearview mirror for the Miami Hurricanes, head coach Mario Cristobal and his staff have left a lasting impression on Plantation (Fla.) American Heritage four-star running back Byron Louis, who visited campus twice during the spring.

“The vibe on campus is like I’m home,” Louis told CaneSport. “Coach Cristobal makes it so welcoming. Because I’m already down here, it’s almost as if it’s like a second American Heritage for me. I love going down to Miami, and I plan to keep going.”

Louis, who is the No. 220 overall prospect in the 2025 class and the No. 18 running back according to the On3 Industry Rankings, is a big fan of the number of his former American Heritage teammates who are currently with the Hurricanes, including 2023 signees Mark Fletcher and Damari Brown.

“I feel like that’s amazing because I grew up around those guys,” Louis said. “Coming in from the eighth grade and just watching them go to Miami is kind of like an eye-opener, and I think to myself that could be me. I’m also going to pay attention to what they do there since that can be a potential home for me.”

According to the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine, Miami is the early favorite to land the 6-foot, 208-pound running back. With his recruiting process beginning to take shape heading into his junior year, Louis knows what he’ll be focusing on while looking into programs.

“A school that can run the ball and rotate their backs because you’re trying to go to the next level,” Louis said. “Also, a school that can develop me as a pass-catcher out of the backfield. For you to be a top back in the country, you’ve got to be able to catch out of the backfield at a high level. Our position is degraded, so with you being able to do both, you’re putting more money in your pockets.”

Louis is poised for a breakout season

With Fletcher now Miami-bound, Louis is projected to become the Patriots’ workhorse this upcoming season and is ready to follow up his sophomore campaign, where he rushed for 439 yards and 11 touchdowns.

“Last year they saw a little flash in me, but this year I’m coming,” Louis said. “I had my big brother Mark (Fletcher) carrying the load, but this year I’m coming.”

Throughout the offseason, Louis has added nearly 15 pounds and is working on his power and explosiveness.

“One thing I feel like I’ve been missing is that second-level explosiveness,” Louis said. “I’ve been running track in the offseason and have also been in the weight room getting bigger, stronger, and faster. Everything else is there; I’ve just got to apply it to the field now.”

CaneSport’s take

Miami has expressed heavy interest in Louis for some time now, and it looks as if it has paid off with him mentioning the Hurricanes as one of his top programs if not at the top right now. Although it is still relatively early in the 2025 cycle, the talented South Florida native looks to be a priority for Miami in his class.
