Recruiting summary
Former Rutgers center Clifford Omoruyi entered the transfer portal March 20. He was one of the hottest commodities upon making that choice to depart Piscataway, New Jersey. Omoruyi had a number of schools reach out to him immediately afterwards.
Recently, the talented big man trimmed his list of suitors to Kansas State, Georgetown, Alabama, UCLA, North Carolina, Baylor, Oregon, Washington, Georgia, St John’s and Mississippi State. Last weekend he took his first visit of the recruiting cycle to Georgetown.
His next trip will be to K-State before making a stop at Alabama over the weekend. Omoruyi arrives in Manhattan on Wednesday and will visit Kansas State the same weekend as Arkansas transfer Khalif Battle.
UCLA and North Carolina may also get a crack at the Nigeria native.
Evaluation of Kansas State target
First and foremost, Omoruyi is an elite rim protector. The graduate transfer averages 1.8 blocks per game for his career and averaged 2.9 this past season. He poses a lot of length and is able to use it well on the defensive end of the court. He is a two-time All Big-Ten selection on the All-Defensive Team.
He is everything K-State wants in a big man. Omoruyi is extremely athletic, can move his feet well and catch lobs. In fact, most of his offensive game comes at the rim on a dunk or layup. 61 percent of Omoruyi’s shots this past season came at the rim where he shot 65.8 percent.
Another major positive is he is not afraid of contact on offense and hunts it out at times. The top 10 transfer posted a 46.5 percent free throw rate this season, which is a great number.
Kansas State has struggled to rebounding at times, but Omoruyi is excellent in that department. In his career he has a 16.5 percent rebounding rate and a 23.7 percent defensive rebounding rate. Remember, K-State was one of the worst teams in the Big 12 this season in defensive rebounding.
Prediction
Getting Omoruyi on campus is a major first step for Kansas State. While I do not feel comfortable calling the Wildcats the leader, I don’t know if anyone is confident in where they stand at the moment. It would obviously be most beneficial for K-State to get a commitment before he takes his visit to Alabama.
