Inside Scoop: Latest on 2025 QB Keelon Russell, 2025 WR Kelshaun Johnson, and 2025 OL Jackson Christian
Inside Texas delivers the latest on a nice recruiting weekend for UT’s Spring game, looking at a second quarterback in 2025, and which offensive lineman is trending Texas in Monday’s Inside Scoop.
Keelon Russell, QB, Duncanville (Texas) – SMU commit
“It was amazing,” Russell told Inside Texas. “Just great vibes and met with Coach (Steve) Sarkisian. He’s a very great guy, but even better head coach. The other coaches are amazing as well, just a great overall experience.”
Texas, Florida, and Ole Miss are in the mix. Alabama coaches are set to see him at Duncanville on Tuesday. He’s scheduled official trips to Ole Miss (April 27-29), SMU (May 17-19), and Florida (June 7-9) at this stage. But more could be on the way.
“I have Ole Miss this coming up week, then figuring some stuff out between schools,” said Russell.
Russell passed for 3,267 yards with 35 touchdowns and only three interceptions in 2023. He also had 304 yards rushing with four touchdowns on the ground.
Texas is perfectly happy with 2025 Saraland (Ala.) four-star KJ Lacey in the Class of 2025. But with Quinn Ewers headed to the NFL next season, it leaves only two scholarship quarterbacks on the roster in January; Arch Manning and Trey Owens.
Russell is the contingency with possibly more upside than the current take. This is just Sarkisian and that staff being diligent.
Kelshaun Johnson, WR, Hitchcock (Texas)
The dynamic four-star had yet to bring his family to Austin for a look at the Longhorns until Saturday. It certainly went well.
At 5-foot-11, 160 pounds, and star on the basketball court and track, Johnson has a number of programs clamoring for the ultra quick pass-catcher. After canceling his unofficial to USC in order to attend Texas’ Orange-White game, Johnson was able to see the wide receiver play in action and catch up with Sarkisian and Chris Jackson.
With offers from Texas, USC, Texas Tech, Penn State, Texas A&M, Arkansas, TCU, Florida, Kansas, and Tennessee, the On3 Industry Ranking’s No. 25-ranked wide receiver and No. 31-ranked prospect in Texas for 2025 has plenty of options.
If Johnson decides to jump in the Texas class, it was almost assure the Horns are taking four receivers this cycle.
Jackson Christian, OL, Port Neches-Groves
After Texas A&M took a pledge from Prosper (Texas) OL Connor Carty last week, and Texas trending with the 6-foot-5, 295-pound Golden Triangle product, this could be one of the dominoes that determines how the in-state crop of offensive linemen settle in.
Christian recently made multiple stops in Austin and could be looking at a decision soon. He feels like he has most of the information to begin narrowing down the schools. Plus, with has official visits to Texas, Texas A&M, and Texas Tech scheduled, this recruitment might not last too much longer.
Christian is a guard at the next level, with center attributes and capabilities.
On3 ranks Christian as the No. 31 interior offensive lineman and the No. 71 player in Texas.
