Nebraska offers OL/DL Shawn Hammerbeck following his visit to Lincoln last week

Nebraska has been working with 6-foot-7, 240-pound Shawn Hammerbeck from Winner (S.D.) to get him to Lincoln for a spring practice. Hammerbeck was looking forward to seeing Nebraska but was surprised by the Huskers’ offer. Nebraska joins Minnesota, Texas Tech, Michigan State, Oregon State, and Kansas State on the list of offers for Hammerbeck.

“We texted a couple of times, and they invited me to a spring practice three weeks ago or so,” Hammerbeck said. “I knew that I wanted to get down there, but we just had to fit it into our schedule, so it finally did. We got down there, and they offered.”

The offer surprised Hammerbeck. He felt like he would return home and have some time to continue developing things with the Nebraska staff, but the offer jump-started everything.

“Going into it, I thought it would be good to get in there and check out what Nebraska has to offer. Then, I would go home and continue to build on our relationship, and an offer would come later. I didn’t expect anything.”

Nebraska likes Shawn Hammerbeck as an athlete

Hammerbeck feels like Nebraska is looking at him as an athlete. He said that if he felt like Nebraska was leaning a way, it was towards seeing him as an offensive tackle.

“They think either offensive tackle or it could be a defensive end,” Hammerbeck said. “I am fine with either; I just want to play football.”

South Dakota is a border state to Nebraska, but Hammerbeck says he didn’t necessarily grow up a Husker fan. In fact, both of his parents graduated from a local college, but he says that being from South Dakota, everyone is familiar with Nebraska football.

“Not really. I would say no. We are really more SDSU Jackrabbit fans. My parents graduated from there. But, being from a small town in South Dakota, everyone knows about Nebraska, and everyone really likes Nebraska football.”

The trip to Nebraska was worth the wait. Hammerbeck really likes what Nebraska offers its student-athletes and what he saw and heard from the coaches and players during the visit.

“I really enjoyed the visit,” Hammerbeck said. “And I really like what they have to offer, whether that is their new facilities or the relationship between the players and the coaches.

“I got to talk with some of the players, and they cleared up some stuff for me. From talking to the Nebraska coaches, it seems that they really care about you more as a person than they do about football.”

Matt Rhule tells Hammerbeck that he would be a good fit in Lincoln

Hammerbeck caught up with a lot of coaches on his visit, but a couple of them really stood out. One of the coaches that stood out was the head coach who told him that he felt like Hammerbeck would be a great fit with the Huskers.

“We caught up with coach Raiola and coach Rhule,” Hammerbeck said. “Coach Rhule is the one who offered me and left me with they recruit good, genuine people and that’s what they build their program on. Being from the Midwest, he thinks I would fit in well.”

There are no immediate plans to make it back to Nebraska. He says that the next visit to Lincoln will be an official visit. He already has two official visits set up in the month of June.

“The next time we go down to Nebraska, it will be for the OV. We are still trying to figure out which dates work for us and which dates they have available.

“I have an OV set up to Minnesota from June 14th to 16th and Texas Tech the weekend after that. The first unofficial visit I went on was to Minnesota, and the next one was to Texas Tech. I went to Kansas State, Kansas, and then Nebraska this past weekend.”
