Transfer portal tracker: As Miami continues evaluating talent, Houston WR one to keep an eye on
The Miami Hurricanes are looking for some portal help at wide receiver, where the team has back its top two threats in Xavier Restrepo and Jacolby George but doesn’t have a lot of proven guys behind them with Colbie Young transferring out and backup Brashard Smith also leaving.
A name in the portal to monitor?
That’s Houston’s Sam Brown, a 6-2, 195-pound junior who orinally signed with West Virginia out of Savannah (Ga.) New Hampstead High School as a three-star industry recruit.
He was a backup at West Virginia in 2020 and 2021, then as a redshirt freshman at Houston in 2022 started seven games and had 471 receiving yards with four TDs.
Samuel Brown’s eight-yard touchdown catch gives Cougars a 28-24 lead over Mountaineers
Samuel Brown takes it deep down the sideline via 52-yard catch and run
This past season? In four of the first five games he had 99 or more receiving yards but then faded a big down the stretch. He still ended as the team leader with 62 catches for 815 yards along with three TDs.
His 20 missed tackles forced after a reception ranked eighth among Power 5 receivers.
Per Pro Football Focus in 694 reps last sesaon he graded out at 72.9 percent overall with four drops; he lined up in the slot on 55 of his reps.
In 2022 he graded out at 64.0 with four drops as well. He averaged 6.7 yards after catch per reception last year and 4.0 the prior season. His longest play went for 53 yards.
Is he that can’t miss go-to threat type of guy? Not so much, but at Miami he could be a solid No. 3 option and push for the outside starting job that right now appears likely to belong to Isaiah Horton.
So stay tuned here.
