5-star WR Kaliq Lockett recounts ‘special’ LSU visit with star-studded list of recruits

5-star WR Kaliq Lockett recounts ‘special’ LSU visit with star-studded list of recruits

2025 five-star Sachse (Tex.) wide receiver Kaliq Lockett is fresh off his first visit to LSU in more than a year when he tripped to Baton Rouge for the Spring Game.

It was important for the 6-1, 175-pound prospect to see LSU. He got the chance to hang around multiple commitments for the Tigers, including the No. 1 player in America.

“Getting back to LSU was definitely the biggest part because I’m really in the prime of my recruitment right now,” Lockett told On3 on Tuesday. “The best thing about it was getting the chance to be around Bryce Underwood, Harlem Berry, DJ Pickett, a lot of big-time recruits were there. Getting the chance to spend time with Coach Hankton and the rest of the staff, that was pretty special.

“One thing that intrigued me about LSU was how they treat their players. It hasn’t really been too many guys that’s entered the transfer portal at LSU and you can see why. Their receiver room is pretty stacked already right now.”

The visit impressed in numerous ways and it included a pitch from Underwood, who leads one of the nation’s top classes that is wanting to capture a National Championship.

“Come to LSU. Come be a part of a dynasty, be the best class and come win a National Championship. That don’t sound too bad. That sounds like a plan,” Lockett said. “The 2025 class is hot with all the recruits and commits, and I see why, because LSU is that program. I’m really liking LSU and they’re pretty high on my list right now.”

Underwood is locked in with LSU, but there are more ties for Lockett to the 2025 class for the Tigers. He’s also got family sprinkled throughout Louisiana.

“Bryce plays a big role in that. Harlem because I played with Harlem when we was on the Bootleggers too. Dakorien Moore, he plays a big part in it too, because we’re around the same area. We’re good friends. We’ll break records with me and him, if we’re able to play together.”

It’s LSU wide receivers coach, Cortez Hankton, that’s also been a key in his recruitment. Between developing a relationship even before Lockett held an offer to the production from LSU’s wideouts, Hankton is standing on solid footing in Lockett’s recruitment.

“I went there without an offer. The first time I met him he was very down-to-earth guy,” Lockett recalled from his visit last spring. “The people that he’s put in in the league already, he’s just had two of them. Malik Nabers and BT (Brian Thomas). His ability to be able to put receivers in the league and be able to develop them and the way he coaches, that’s pretty special. That’s why he’s one of the best receiver coaches in college football.”

LSU will host him May 31 for its official visit, the first of his run of visits in June. He’s got more to be scheduled as well.

Multiple official visits set for 5-star WR

He’s also locked in official visits to USC (June 7), Florida State (June 14) and Texas (June 21). He spoke about the trio of programs as well as Texas A&M, where he’s unsure if he’ll visit again this weekend because of track, but plans to take an official visit.

Texas: “I saw how polished the receivers looked and with coach Jackson being there, too.Him coming from Jacksonville and what he did already with the program and how he’s got Xavier Worthy right. AD Mitchell and now he has you know, Isaiah Bond, Johntay Cook, Ryan Wingo. With those guys, I feel like Texas is gonna make a big splash in college football this year.”

Texas A&M: “What Coach Elko did with Duke. He took a 2-9 Duke team to an 8-4 Duke team with not near as much the resources that A&M has. When you combine Coach Elko’s experience and his coaching style with A&M’s resources, A&M might make a big splash and they’re going to make a big splash.”

USC: “My family’s from USC and that was a dream school for me and all my family, my cousins growing up. That’s all they talked about was USC, USC, USC. USC has always been a childhood dream.”

Florida State: “To be honest, I didn’t think I was gonna like it as much as I did when I went. It really made a shock how coach Norvell had treated me, coach Dugans, how the rest of the coach staff had treated me. What they did with Keon Coleman and Johnny Wilson and they have more receivers coming in right now like Hakeem Williams and more receivers coming back so Florida State is definitely in play, too.”

Summer decision appears to be looming for Lockett

While Lockett admits a decision could technically come at any time, he has a busy slate of official visits that he plans to take. He won’t be dropping a formal top schools list, but instead using his officials to finalize his decision.

“I think the officials, I already have an idea of what schools that are already in my top range,” Lockett said. “I think the officials are just to be around the players and see what they think about the program. Getting to feel out the program a little bit more and to get a feel around the cities like Tallahassee, Florida State, Baton Rouge in Louisiana, LA, USC, Austin, College Station. I think that’s really the biggest thing and the family field because I’m real big on family and it’s gonna be hard to leave my family.”

What are the priorities for him? It whittles down to a family feel.

“Development is not really even a discussion because every school that I’m considering right now is Is known for putting receivers in the league. I would say family, definitely family.”

According to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies, Lockett ranks as the No. 14 overall prospect in the country and second-best wideout in America. Texas leads the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine over LSU and Florida State.
