From the road: Michigan recruiting intel on On300 OL Bennett Warren
*** Let’s just get the elephant in the room out of the way. Michigan is on a first come first serve basis along the offensive line. That means the Wolverines would take one of On300 offensive linemen Bennett Warren and Max Anderson depending on who claims their spot first. Warren seemed to be trending as the more likely candidate over the last few days due to his earlier timeline. But not so fast, my friends. Warren just told me that he is no longer planning to commit in the summer. Instead, Warren said he wants to take his recruitment into the fall and potentially December. If he waits that long, Michigan could be out of spots unless it makes room for him. It will be interesting to see how the numbers work out.
*** And that means Anderson could very well get the spot. It looks like he wants to take it deeper into summer but does want to make a decision before his senior season. That would put his timeline ahead of Warren’s. I plan on seeing Anderson tomorrow, so I should get a better idea of where things stand with him then. Let’s get back to Warren. The Fort Bend (Texas) Christian tackle named Michigan his leader following his spring game visit, but I do think the visit high has worn off a bit. I don’t think Michigan is the clear-cut leader here as I’ve heard multiple schools, including Oklahoma, have some sort of optimism. Right now, Warren is slated to make June OVs to Texas A&M, Michigan, Oklahoma and Oregon in that order.
*** There are some other schools still involved with Warren as well. With him going deeper in the process, Warren added that official visits to Florida, Tennessee and Texas are possible as well — remember, recruits can now take more than five. Both Tennessee and Texas were at his practice today. With all of this said, this is still a winnable recruitment for Michigan. U-M offensive line coach Sherrone Moore has done a fantastic job building a strong relationship with Warren, who is impressed with his ability as a coach and developer. Warren is also close with some of the commits, including offensive line pledges Blake Frazier and Andrew Sprague. Lastly, Warren isn’t a true Texan and spent a lot of his childhood on the East Coast.
*** This was my first time getting a live look at Warren. This workout was in shorts and shorts and featured a long session of 1v1s as well as a few short sessions of individual drills. The first thing that stands out about Warren is his size. The dude is every bit of 6-foot-7, 330 pounds. Warren actually played at 270 last year, and it was easy to tell that he’s still getting adjusted to the added weight. Warren looked a bit slower on his feet and lost a couple of his 1v1s. Warren has tremendous length and an impressive wingspan, but he’s still learning to use that to his advantage. That’s something his head coach, former NFL offensive lineman Jordan Black (Greg Mattison recruited him at Michigan lol), made a point to focus on today. Overall, Warren has a ton of upside but is still a bit of a work in progress.
