Five-star CB Kobe Black set to return to Texas this weekend

Five-star Texas cornerback Kobe Black is back on the road this weekend.

The nation’s No. 3-ranked cornerback out of Waco (Texas) Connelly High School is expected to return to Texas this weekend for an unofficial visit, sources tell On3.

Black already set up his official visit to see Texas for next month (June 23-25) and has visited Austin as much as any other campus so far in his recruitment to this date. Texas, along with Ohio State, are the lone two official visits that Black has scheduled in June.

Longhorns defensive backs coach Terry Joseph, along with head coach Steve Sarkisian have played crucial roles in recruiting the five-star defensive back from Central Texas. The Longhorns is one of a handful of teams recruiting Black at multiple positions in the secondary — cornerback, along with safety and the STAR position.

“Texas is a family atmosphere over there,” Black told On3. “They’re also building something, I see it. There’s a whole bunch of talent there and they’re getting developed well. I can see it.”

“Moving me around, too, playing at STAR, at corner, and moving me around,” Black continued. “That’s catching my eye.”

Texas also inked Black’s former prep teammate at Connally High School, hybrid defensive back/linebacker Jelani McDonald in the 2023 recruiting cycle. Like Black, McDonald will also play multiple positions on The Forty Acres.

The Longhorns are currently leading the way on the On3 Prediction Machine for McDonald, the No. 18 overall player in the country, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average of all four major recruiting media services.

Black’s scouting summary

Black checks in as the No. 18 player in the On3 Industry Ranking for the 2024 class. Here’s more on the elite defensive back from Waco.

Kobe Black is the youngest from a family of college-level players. His oldest brother played hoops in junior college, his middle brother, Korie, plays football for Oklahoma State, and his father Keith was at Kansas State under Bill Snyder. His father was roommates with College Football Hall of Fame quarterback Michael Bishop. Black is a multi-sport star on the football field, hardwood in basketball and on the track for the Connally Cadets, where he excels in the 4×100, 4×200 and 4×400 relays. In football, he does a little bit of everything for Connally. In 2022, he racked up 337 yards rushing and six touchdowns on the ground. He also had 305 yards receiving and five touchdown grabs. He also had 21 tackles, two interceptions and two tackles for a loss at cornerback – an impressive number, especially since teams would not throw his direction. As a sophomore, Black had 41 tackles and seven pass breakups. Those numbers were solid enough for him to be named the Waco Tribune’s Defensive Newcomer of the Year.
