NC State QB commit Will Wilson raves about 3-day trip to Raleigh
Will Wilson has been familiar with NC State quarterback Grayson McCall’s game for a long time. He watched the former Coastal Carolina star compete on multiple occasions while the Wolfpack commit’s older brother Brandon played for Georgia Southern.
He made another trip from Columbia, South Carolina, to Raleigh last week. The class of 2025 quarterback commit spent three days on campus, watching practice, studying film and attending the spring game.
McCall’s accuracy stood out to him. Freshman CJ Bailey’s talent jumped off of the tape, and Wilson complimented redshirt freshman Lex Thomas’ arm talent and decision making. Wilson said the quarterbacks immediately embraced him as their future teammate.
“I got to know everybody in the room,” Wilson said. “They took me in as one of the guys, especially Grayson, so it was pretty cool.”
The Wolfpack quarterback commit watched McCall dominate the Sun Belt, and he bonded with his fellow signal-caller over his three-day trip to NC State. He committed to the program last summer and has visited plenty of times since then.
There was nothing new for the Pack staff to show him on this trip, so he just spent his time on campus taking a close look at his future team, while also building closer connections with the coaching staff.
With so many talented playmakers on the field during spring practice, he noticed a new vibe around the program.
“When you go to practice, you can tell the difference,” Wilson said. “It’s the right guys in the right place. There’s great leadership and everything… The future’s bright for the Wolfpack.”
Quarterbacks coach Kurt Roper continued to bond with Wilson during this trip. They are already very close, but this trip helped the NC State commit see that his future position coach’s personality is consistent. He does not switch anything up when talking to his players or talking to recruits.
Head coach Dave Doeren was one of the main reasons Wilson committed to the Pack over offers from South Carolina, Penn State, TCU and others. They spent some more time together on this trip.
“Leadership starts from the top,” Wilson said. “And if you have a great person like that, that makes it easy for everyone. He’s a reflection of the program, and this is a great one.”
While on campus for the spring game, he also delivered a recruiting pitch to some uncommitted prospects. Wilson is talking to a few fellow South Carolina stars— four-star wide receiver Malik Clark, three-star tight end Mike Tyler and class of 2026 quarterback Jayvon Gilmore— about teaming up with him in Raleigh.
He shared his pitch with TheWolfpacker.com. The quarterback is confident in NC State’s potential on the field, but he’s excited to join the program for more than just its football.
“It’s a new era in Raleigh… There are a lot of opportunities out there with businesses, internships, things like that,” Wilson said. “You can come in at NC State and do whatever you want, major in whatever. But also, you can come be a part of a football program that’s a brotherhood that’s going to prepare you for life after ball…
“It’s a great opportunity for you to just better your life and grow as a man.”
Wilson will officially visit NC State June 21-23. Clark is already spending that weekend with the Pack, and the quarterback is working to get more talent on campus for the final stretch of summer OVs.
“It’s going to be a big one,” Wilson said. “I can’t wait. It’s going to be a great time. Getting to spend time with some great people, getting to learn [about] some new guys, and hopefully we can get some guys to call Raleigh their home.”
