Auburn offers 2023 PF Mitchell Holmes, will get official visit soon

Mitchell Holmes has seen a recent uptick in his recruitment.

The Class of 2023 power forward/center had an impressive performance at a recent Nike EYBL event in Phoenix, Ariz. Several colleges coaches were there to see it.

That includes Auburn’s Bruce Pearl and assistant Corey Williams. The two coaches liked what they saw from Holmes, so much so that they extended an offer.

“I played in Phoenix in a live period,” Holmes said. “Coach Corey Williams called me and told me that he had seen me play. He said that him and Coach BP really liked how I played and that they were offering me.”

It was news Holmes had been working for and hoping to hear.

“It felt great,” Holmes said. “Felt awesome. It’s a sign that all of my hard work is paying off.”

Auburn offer special to Holmes

It was special that the offer came from Auburn.

“It’s great to be recognized by Auburn,” he said. “Auburn is a Power 5 school and in the SEC. I know they are a really good program. They did really good in the tournament 3-4 years ago.

“They are a good program and I know they are tough on defense. Coach Pearl is a tough-minded coach and I like that. I also like that they play in the SEC against tough competition every night.”

Holmes, who is at Oak Ridge in Arlington, Texas, never has visited Auburn, but that will change soon.

“They said we will set up a visit soon,” he said. “Probably after the dead period.”

Holmes on Monday visited SMU and left with an offer. He said Auburn and SMU are two of his top options, but he isn’t ruling anyone out at this point.

“My options are still open, but those are two of the main ones that are pursuing me,” he said.

Holmes, who said he is 6-foot-11 and 200 pounds, could play the 4 or the 5 in college.

“It doesn’t matter as long as I’m on the court,” he said.

As for a timeline for a decision, he plans to take as much time as needed.

“I’m going to take time and visits,” he said. “I don’t want to feel rushed. I only get this chance once and I don’t want to mess up.”

Holmes is ranked the No. 170 overall recruit in the ’23 class, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, an industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He also ranks the No. 35 power forward in the country and No. 3 overall recruit in Texas.
