Michigan State to host Luniewski twins for official visits in June

Columbus, Ohio – Michigan State will host Cincinnati (Ohio) Hills Christian Academy twins Mercer and Charlton Luniewski for official visits on June 23. The three-star prospects both received offers from Spartans’ associate head coach, offensive line coach, and run game coordinator Chris Kapilovic earlier this spring.

Mercer received MVP honors at this past weekend’s Under Armour All-American Camp in Columbus, Ohio. The 6-foot-5.5, 310-pound Mercer holds numerous Power Five offers. Charlton, who measures in at 6-foot-4.5, 285-pounds also holds offer from Kentucky and Michigan State. They visited Wisconsin, Kentucky, Wake Forest, Ohio State, Penn State, and Georgia this spring.

The twins visited East Lansing for spring practice, receiving offers on April 13. SpartanMag.com spoke to each brother following the camp, updating their Michigan State recruitment.

“We started getting in contact with Coach Lail and Coach Kap in February, so it wasn’t a long time coming, but we were definitely excited to get up to Lansing,” Charlton said. “We got to watch a nice outdoor practice, the sun was beaming. The offensive line got to work. Those guys were strong. Coach Kap is definitely a guy of detail. He is definitely very expressive. Once you stop yelling at your guys they stop loving you. He definitely loves his guys.”

Michigan State graduate assistant Jacob Lail played a big role in getting the twins to campus.

“Coach Lail, he works everything,” Charlton said. “He is a miracle worker. It was a seamless process getting up there and I owe that to Coach Lail and Coach Kap.”

It was head coach Mel Tucker who offered the twins while meeting in his office. Kapilovic made sure to reaffirm their status on his board later as well.

“We got to sit down in Coach Tucker’s office,” Charlton said. “It was kind of scary at first, he is quiet and just the atmosphere of it. You get to know him and you know he has a lot of love for you.”

The other brother, Mercer, had a similar sentiment when recalling their first trip to East Lansing.

“Initially it was Coach Tuck (who offered),” Mercer told SpartanMag.com. “Then Coach Kap reaffirmed how much he wanted us individually. There was overwhelming love for sure.”

“It was incredible honesty,” Mercer continued. “It was a unique experience there. Every school has their own kind of jazz to it, and culture. It was excellent seeing those guys. They had an awesome practice. It was a quick pace, they really got after it.”

Mercer was impressed when watching Kapilovic and Lail interact with the Michigan State offensive line group. The twins were able to speak with some current players, getting to hear their unfiltered thoughts on the program.

“There was a lot of accountability with those guys” Mercer continued. “We got a lot of player testimony from the guys. Even the ones who are injured expressed how much love is in that building and in that room. They all really enjoy their experience and it gives them the opportunity to go pro. So, all around it was a beautiful and really inspiring and positive day for us.”

As for what Kapilovic and Tucker like about the twins? It all starts with their athleticism for their size, which was on display by each during Sunday’s camp.

“They like my flexibility,” Mercer said. “At this point I am 315-pounds, I am trying to play at 305 or so. I have a 6-foot-6.5 frame. I can really move and bend so I have a lot of very unique athletic features and I will really hold that line down.”

“He loves the way we move,” Charlton said. “He says we are natural athletes, which I agree with. Coach Kap also says we are just wired differently, I think that is a good trait to have. I am not saying that about myself but if he is saying it I will take his word for it.”

The twins will “absolutely” play together at the next level, looking to put together a top list of schools later this summer. The Michigan State visit is the only official visit on the schedule as of now.

Both twins are ranked three-stars. Mercer is ranked the No. 822 overall recruit, the No. 57 offensive tackle, and the No. 29 recruit in Ohio by the 2024 On3 Industry Rankings.

Charlton is ranked the No. 124 interior offensive lineman, and the No. 68 recruit in Ohio by On3.com.

The Recruiting Prediction Machine (RPM) gives Michigan State a 40% chance to land Mercer, with Kentucky sitting at 26.4%, and Pittsburgh with 6.8%.

For Charlton it gives Michigan State a slightly higher percentage with the Spartans sitting at 56.9%, and Kentucky with 37.7%.

Jason’s Take:

The twins performed very well at the Under Armour All-American Camp, with Mercer coming away with an offensive line MVP award. As twins do, Charlton mirrored his brother with his play having himself an impressive performance as well. With both lineman offering flexibility, they would be a good pair next to Michigan State commitments, Mt. Pleasant (Mich.) High School interior lineman Andrew Dennis (6-4, 285) and Baltimore (Md.) St. Frances Academy offensive lineman Logan Bennett (6-5, 310).

The Spartans could close this recruitment during official visit season, being the only visit scheduled right now, and likely getting the last at-bat. Both brothers are set on playing together, and Michigan State seems to be prioritizing both heavily going into the summer. Wisconsin has currently only offered Mercer, with Kentucky and Virginia offering both. Additionally, Penn State, Wake Forest, and Ohio State are showing interest in the twins as well.
