CaneSport is breaking down the top 50 post-spring players on the roster, a list that doesn’t include any post-spring roster additions. Today we break down No. 45, Logan Sagapolu.
NO. 45 MIAMI OG LOGAN SAGAPOLU
Why he’s No. 45
A 6-2, 338-pound interior lineman, Sagapolu transferred to Miami last year from Oregon, following coaches Mario Cristobal and Alex Mirabal. The former 3-star recruit in the Class of 2019 redshirted in 2020 and then missed his freshman 2021 season at Oregon with a torn triceps suffered in fall camp, and was the second team right guard at that time. At Miami last season he played in five games, starting against Virginia Tech. He didn’t fare particularly well, grading out at 51.3 percent overall with a 36.6 pass block grade and 51.8 run block grade per Pro Football Focus in 177 reps.
What he needs to do to move up this list
Sagapolu is one of the most physically strong players on Miami’s team with an 800-pound squat, but he has to be able to translate that into power on the field. He should be a people mover in the run game, but his lack of quickness has been an issue. So he has to show the ability to pull and move in space in order for Shannon Dawson to be able to really utilize him in this offense.
Realistic season objective
With a thin depth chart across the line there’s no reason Sagapolu can’t begin the season in the two-deep, and as we saw last year when he was in the same boat injuries wound up giving him a start. In Year 3 he has to be ready to respond and perform at a high level if and when he is called upon. Javion Cohen and Anez Cooper were the first team guards this spring, but Cooper struggled and the other backup along with Sagapolu was Tommy Kinsler. So if Jalen Rivers doesn’t move back to guard (which will likely hinge on Zion Nelson coming off a knee injury/Samson Okunlola being ready to step up) then Sagapolu should be in line for some action this season and must be ready to respond.
