ScoopDuck Eval: Ify Obidwegu

Oregon scored Sunday morning with the addition of St. Frances Academy (Md.) corner Ify Obidwegu. It was a massive recruiting win for the Ducks and Demetrice Martin.

Obidwegu sits just inside the top 100 of the On3 Industry Rankings. But we take a closer look at the 6-foot, 190-pounder and what really stands out from his film.

Coach Meat keeps the momentum rolling in his room, parlaying an excellent finish to last years class with the addition of another long, rangy, and twitchy corner (Daylen Austin) and now starting the class of 2024 with talented top 100 prospect Ify Obidegwu. Teammate of top Duck QB target Michael Van Buren, Ify isn’t a tag along to help our odds with Van Buren. He’s a legitimate elite level prospect that Lanning and company pulled from the grips of basically every blue blood coast to coast.

Obidegwu has a phenomenal frame. At 6’2 and 180 pounds with disproportionately long arms. He clearly fits the mold that Coach Meat and Coach Lanning prefer of a bigger more physically imposing corner who can matchup with a big WR and also play off blocks and a physical addition to the run/screen game. The beautiful thing about Ify’s physical skillset is you aren’t sacrificing short area quickness or fluid movement skills to acquire the desired length and size. Ify like Daylen Austin and other top Corner target Dakota Fields has abnormal twitch and fluidity for such a big corner. Despite playing with fantastic physicality Obidegwu doesn’t lose in transition and doesn’t play grabby and trusts his speed/mobility in coverage.

Scheme wise this is the type of corner that can play any coverage, field or boundary. Put him in press and his long arms and size will allow him to control smaller WR’s off the line. Play him off or in zone/cloud coverage and his reactive quickness and range will allow him to cover space and read the QB. He has all of the speed necessary to carry vertical routes and the size to squeeze the redline and reduce margin for opposing QB’s.

An elite pickup for the staff that allows Coach Meat to be incredibly choosy going forward. These are the types of prospects that elite defenses are built off. You can never have too many guys who can cover and in my estimation Ify can cover much better than most.
