Coach’s Take: New Michigan WR commit Channing Goodwin is ‘the guy you want’
Michigan is making Charlotte (N.C.) Providence Day a second home on the recruiting trail this cycle.
The Wolverines landed Top 100 quarterback Jadyn Davis earlier this spring and closed with three-star wide receiver Channing Goodwin on Sunday afternoon.
“They do a really good job building relationships with the kids and keeping me informed,” said Providence Day head coach Chad Grier. “I think that helps all of us. I’ve been very impressed with them. They’ve done a good job with all of our guys.”
In Goodwin, the Wolverines are getting one of the most consistent pass catchers in the country.
While Goodwin won’t wow you with testing times, he’s an advanced route runner, a security blanket on third downs and a terrific natural pass catcher. On top of that, Goodwin is a two-way starter and a key member of Providence Day’s baseball team.
“Channing is a model guy,” Grier said. “He’s the guy you want. He’s incredibly dependable. He’s going to play hurt. He’s tough, strong, fast and smart. There are no chinks in the armor with Channing. We situationally asked him to play safety for us, and he ended up being a starter and playing both ways the whole game.
“He ran punts back for touchdowns and did everything. He’s a terrific football player and a really great kid. He brings the whole package.”
Michigan wide receivers coach Ron Bellamy led the way in Goodwin’s recruitment and impressed Grier with his approach and candor.
“I love the fact that I saw Coach (Ron) Bellamy, and I asked him point blank: ‘Where are you with Channing?’ ‘Is he tied to Jadyn?’ He said ‘he’s a take for us right now.’ That was good to hear from Michigan. I like Bellamy a lot,” Grier said.
The next step for Bellamy and Michigan is landing another Providence Day pass catcher in four-star prospect Jordan Shipp.
Grier believes Goodwin and Shipp would continue to complement each other well at the next level.
“People always try to compare Shipp and Channing, but they are so different in their games,” he said. “Going into last year, Channing was more twitchy. He ran different kinds of routes than Shipp would run. Shipp got more explosive. They’ve traded skillsets and are adding to each other.”
Goodwin picked Michigan over offers from Boston College, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, North Carolina, NC State, South Carolina, Virginia Tech and others.
At 6-foot-1, 175 pounds, Goodwin is ranked as the No. 77 wide receiver and No. 436 overall prospect nationally, per the On3 Industry Ranking.
