JD PicKell: What FSU would get if Michigan State transfer Keon Coleman commits
Keon Coleman gave Big Ten teams all kinds of issues during his time at Michigan State. He could soon be a problem for the ACC if he ends up at Florida State.
Coleman has yet to commit anywhere, but he is on a visit to Florida State this weekend.
The 6-foot-4 receiver is a tough matchup for defensive backs due to his size, speed and hands.
On3’s JD Pickell recently broke down what FSU would get if Coleman ends up with the Seminoles.
“Proven production – 6—foot-4, 215 pounds. Legitimate NFL draft prospect. Had 58 catches, 798 yards, found the end zone seven times last season. Dude is a baller. Also played basketball at one time for Michigan State. Do you know how freakish of an athlete you have to be to play basketball and football at a place like Michigan State? … To do it at a power like Michigan State in both those sports, that’s impressive. Freakish athlete,” Pickell said.
“When you watch the tape with Keon Coleman, he is a 1-on-1 nightmare. Like you watch Payton Thorne when he was playing at Michigan State, and you see no safety over the top, and you’ve got man coverage for Keon Coleman, like every single time it’s, ‘Hey, we’re going to 0. Put the ball up, don’t care where you’re at, come down with it.’ That was the kind of game you were able to play above the rim with Keon Coleman at wide receiver for you.”
As Pickell said, Coleman caught 58 passes for 798 yards and seven touchdowns last season as he averaged nearly 14 yards per reception.
Coleman is rated as the second-best non-committed player in the On3 transfer portal player rankings.
He would be a huge addition to a Florida State program that has already landed some impact transfers this offseason.
“When I look at Keon Coleman and what adding him is all about, it’s about ensuring and increasing your odds that you can achieve what you plan to achieve in 2023, because it’s all there for you. Jordan Travis, back for another year. Went and got some guys through the portal – defensively and offensively. Got Fentrell Cypress at corner. Got Jaheim Bell playing tight end. You add Keon Coleman, you have a real chance to accomplish everything that you want to accomplish,” Pickell said.
“I’m not saying that he’s far and away going to be the difference maker, but just think about the offense. You continue to elevate the floor and break open the ceiling of what you’re capable of. Because that’s what this year is about, man. It’s all building for this year. It’s all right there in front of them. And so adding a player of his caliber would be a very big addition, would bolster the offense, could be a critical piece to what they want to get done in 2023.”
Florida State is already arguably the favorite in the ACC entering the 2023 season. Adding Coleman could be the piece the Seminoles need to win their first ACC title since 2014 and potentially accomplish even more.
