South Carolina football offseason to-do list
Spring ball is over and the transfer portal window has closed, which means South Carolina is in the throws of the offseason.
It’s a pivotal one for the Gamecocks, who are breaking in a new offensive coordinator, replacing a good chunk of production on both sides and set to enroll a top-20 recruiting class.
Here’s what South Carolina can do this offseason to continue its upward trajectory heading into 2023.

Solidify the quarterback depth chart
It’s no secret who the starter is going to be behind center for South Carolina, but the pecking order behind Spencer Rattler remains to be seen.
Luke Doty is the incumbent and the likely favorite there entering the summer, but Beamer has mentioned freshmen LaNorris Sellers and Tanner Bailey pushing him. Both youngsters showed promise in the spring game, and Sellers has been the talk of spring since he arrived.
Figuring out who the backup will be behind Rattler is going to be something the Gamecocks will be monitoring and evaluating as the summer roars onward.
Add depth at EDGE and running back
Those are probably the two most glaring positions right now that lack a ton of depth, and South Carolina is trying to remedy some of that. The Gamecocks are active in the portal trying to add pieces in the offensive backfield and up front to bolster the defensive line.

They’ve shown interest in Jatius Greer out of Syracuse as a defensive lineman and Notre Dame running back Logan Diggs, among others.
There are other spots South Carolina is targeting, but adding pieces at both of those positions is vital heading into the summer.
Get the freshmen up to speed, ready to go
Summer is big from a development standpoint and it will be integral for what could be a very impactful transfer portal class. While it’s not the be-all, end-all the summer does give coaches a chance to see what they have in players.
It will be the first evaluation tool for a few potential instant-impact guys like Nyck Harbor, DJ Braswell, Vicari Swain and others. Then it gives South Carolina a chance to continue developing the guys who were here in the spring.
South Carolina has a few of those early enrollees–Desmond Umeozulu, Markee Anderson, Elijah Davis, Pup Howard, Xzavier McLeod–who could all earn roles this year. Getting them in better positions physically and in the playbook could be huge.

Continue to streamline offensively
There were some good and some growing pains as South Carolina tries to implement and refine a new offense under Dowell Loggains. That process of streamlining, which the Gamecocks needed after last season, is going to continue throughout the summer and into camp.
South Carolina will largely have its full complement of players to work with this summer and coaches can get an idea of what it’s working with. Being able to tailor the playbook and tweak it over the summer before camp starts could be big.
