Texas Hoops: A look at the roster and recruiting

Texas Hoops: A look at the roster and recruiting

The Texas Longhorns picked up two key pieces to the 2023-24 team and beyond Thursday with commitments from UT-Arlington transfer guard Chendall Weaver and UTEP transfer power forward Ze’rik Onyema.

The two big wins give Rodney Terry and staff the makings of another top 25 ranked team should the Horns add two or three more pieces in the portal.

Inside Texas takes a look at the Texas 2023-24 roster as it currently stands with Tyrese Hunter having until June 1 to make a decision if he will return for one more season.

Texas’ Current Roster

G Max Abmas, 6-0, super senior (21.9 points, 4.4 rebounds, 4.0 assists at ORU)
G Chendall Weaver, 6-3, sophomore (9.5 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.0 assists at UTA)
F Alex Anamekwe, 6-5.5, sophomore (1.5 points, 0.7 rebounds)
F Brock Cunningham, 6-5.5, super duper senior (4.6 points, 3.4 rebounds, 1.4 assists)
PF Dylan Disu, 6-9, super senior (8.8 points, 4.4 rebounds, 1.4 blocks)
PF Ze’Rik Onyema, 6-8, senior (7.1 points, 4.4 rebounds, 0.5 blocks at UTEP)
C Kadin Shedrick, 6-11, senior (6.2 points, 3.8 rebounds, 1.4 blocks at Virginia)

Possible to return

Point guard Tyrese Hunter remains a possibility to return to Texas for one more season. The former Big 12 Freshman of the Year that has played in two Sweet 16’s and an Elite Eight continues to be around 50-50 to return. Those odds are increasing according to a couple of people close to the program.

Hunter averaged 10.3 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists last season, and would be a crucial piece to helping maximize the Texas team in 2023-24. Hunter would allow Abmas to play off the ball more than the last couple of years, and would combine with Weaver to have a very athletic backcourt.

Not likely to return

Forward Dillon Mitchell is not expected to return, as of today.

Needs remaining for the Horns

Texas would ideally like to have Hunter return, and then add a big guard through the portal. Ideally that would be a big guard that provides another perimeter threat. If Texas can get both of those pieces, it would likely be the best three-point shooting team at Texas since the 2007-08 season.

A big wing/forward is also wanted, but finding that piece that is willing to play a role is tougher than many believe.

Texas is not currently expected to sign a high school prospect. Bronny James is expected to end up at USC, for those wondering. If Texas was to eventually ink a high school prospect, it would likely be a big guard.
