Top 150 recruit from the South schedules Notre Dame official visit

One of the top defensive backs in the 2024 class has scheduled a return trip to Notre Dame. On Wednesday, On3’s No.11 safety, Paul Mencke Jr., told Blue & Gold he is returning to South Bend on an official visit from June 2-4.

The 6-foot-2, 174-pound Mencke first went to Notre Dame on an unofficial college recruiting visit the weekend of April 15. So far this year, he’s also been to Duke, Houston, Kansas and Stanford. And Mencke will also get back to two of those schools on official visits.

Mencke told Blue & Gold he’s also officially visiting Duke (June 16-18) and Stanford (June 23-25). The Cibolo (Texas) Samuel Clemens High product also hopes to officially visit Washington from June 20-22.

2024 class recruits are only allotted five official visits from April 1 to June 25. However, with legislation effective July 1, recruits can make unlimited official visits, but no more than one per school (unless there is a head coaching change). After June 25, recruits cannot officially visit schools again until Sept. 1 of their senior years.

2025 class recruits and beyond still cannot begin officially visiting schools until April 1 of their junior years.

Mencke’s recruitment caught traction with his first Power Five scholarship offer from Kansas about a year ago. Since then, he’s added 11 others, including ones from Iowa State, Minnesota, Missouri, Vanderbilt and Washington State.

He is the son of former Washington State quarterback Paul Mencke, who played for the Cougars in the late 90s.

The On3 Industry Ranking — a proprietary algorithm that compiles ratings and rankings from all four primary recruiting media services — evaluates Mencke Jr. as the No. 404 player, No. 36 safety and No. 68 prospect in Texas. It also rates him as a three-star prospect.

However, in On3’s own rankings, Mencke is the No. 137 player, No. 11 safety and No. 27 Texas prospect. He is also considered a four-star recruit.

As a junior, Mencke had 67 tackles and three interceptions.

Another Texas target will also officially visit Notre Dame from June 2-4

The weekends of June 9 and 16 are shaping up to be Notre Dame’s biggest official visitor weekends this recruiting cycle. However, the Irish will have a handful of recruits on hand the first weekend of June.

In addition to Mencke, Blue & Gold previously reported four-star running back Kedren Young will officially visit from June 2-4. Irish offensive line commits Peter Jones, and Anthonie Knapp will also be in town that weekend.

Irish safeties coach Chris O’Leary visited Mencke at his high school on Monday.
