SMU checks in on key 4-star target

SMU running backs coach Khenon Hall is in Houston on Wednesday to see one of the top available prospects in the country. 2024 Houston (Tex.) St. Thomas running back Johann Cardenas, who decommitted from Texas Tech this spring, is a big target for Hall.

Hall will be checking in on the four-star prospect as evaluations and recruiting continue for the Mustangs. Cardenas also holds offers from Colorado, Colorado State, Oregon, Sam Houston State, SMU, UTSA, Vanderbilt and others. Kentucky and Georgia Tech offered recently as well.

The 6-1, 217-pound prospect ranks on On3 as the No. 161 overall prospect in the country and No. 14 running back in the nation. According to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies, he’s the No. 309 overall prospect and No. 25 running back nationally.

Cardenas rushed for 1,041 yards and 13 touchdowns on 108 carries, which was good for 9.63 yards per carry. He added 20 receptions for 330 yards and five scores catching the ball.

SMU’s working to get Cardenas back up for a visit and it starts with Hall hitting the pavement in H-Town to see him.

Cardenas has an On3 NIL Valuation of $38K. The On3 NIL Valuation is the industry’s leading index that sets high school and college athletes’ projected annual value (PAV). The NIL valuation does not act as a tracker of the value of NIL deals an athlete has completed to date. It rather signifies an athlete’s value at a certain moment in time.
