Quinn Ewers sounds off on the progress of Texas’ rebuilt offensive line this offseason
The Texas Longhorns are expecting big things out of their offensive line this upcoming season. If they can keep the pocket clean for starting quarterback Quinn Ewers, many throughout the college landscape believe he will finish the year what a solid case for the Heisman Trophy. But right now, in the spring, the Longhorns’ offensive line has been working on their camaraderie on the field and helping to develop the classes under them. Following Texas’ spring game, Ewers revealed that the offensive line starting five has been working hand in hand with developing the newcomers to the program. And Ewers is loving what he’s seeing from all parties involved.
“I think we have a really good starting five that shows them what it looks like. And obviously, Neto (was) starting there today. Having the depth that we do is awesome. They’re great guys, and I’m excited to see where they go. But yeah, we have a great group of guys that kind of show them what it looks like, and they’re really bought in on that,” said Ewers.
Having significant depth on the offensive line will be huge for the Longhorns next season. But on department where Texas needs to figure a few things out at is the backup quarterback position. With Hudson Card off to Purdue, the Longhorns have a Texas-sized hole to fill behind Ewers.
Ewers explains offseason development of redshirt freshman QB Maalik Murphy
With Ewers looking like the bona fide starter for Texas next season, the question becomes who his immediate backup is. Two of the likely candidates to fill that role are true freshman Arch Manning and redshirt freshman Maalik Murphy. Following the Texas spring football game, Ewers gave his thoughts on Murphy’s development over the spring.
“I would say he’s a lot more comfortable than he was last year. We came at the same time, and a year in this system really, really helps you out. I’ve seen him make huge strides in his knowledge of the playbook and knowledge of the defenses. And I’m excited for his future too; he’s in a great spot right now,” said Ewers.
Murphy was a highly recruited quarterback in the 2022 recruiting class out of Gardena, CA, according to On3’s Industry Rankings. Overall, the former four-star quarterback was the No. 12 ranked quarterback in his class. Partially for him, joining him on the Longhorns roster was the No. 1 overall rated recruit in the previous class, Quinn Ewers. Ewers decided to return to his home state of Texas after just one season at Ohio State.
