Blue Chips: Breaking down Top 100 Michigan DB target DJ Pickett

I recently caught up with Zephyrhills (Fla.) High head coach Nick Carroll to get his thoughts on Top 100 2025 Michigan defensive back target DJ Pickett

Here are some highlights from the interview.

On his overall thoughts on Pickett:

“His dad and I played together when we were in high school, so it’s pretty special to be able to coach DJ. He’s another great Pickett that has come through Zephyrhills. I also played with his uncle, Ryan, who went to Ohio State. It’s a cool experience to coach your friend’s son. But DJ is a a great kid. He sticks to himself. He tends to crack jokes and have a good time with his buddies, but, for the most part, he stays to himself. He stays quiet and works hard.”

On Pickett’s biggest strengths:

“His length. He’s very long. He tracks balls really well. His speed. From where he started last year to where he is now, his speed is something that has improved and is very good. His transition in his feet is very good. He’s a great athlete. He can play any sport and be great.”

On where Pickett projects best:

“Some coaches have mentioned corner. Other coaches like him at safety. I think he’ll play corner. He gets hands on you. The ball is getting thrown in a tight window when he’s covering a kid, and he’s able to run, so that’s going to create issues with receivers finding ways to make catches in that window. It’s tough going against a long, 6-foot-4 corner.”

On what Pickett is still working on:

“We’ve been working in the weight room. He has to get stronger. That will also help him run with force down the track. I’m a track guy, so power cleans, squats and those types of lifts are important. Just putting on more muscle to help him stay healthy and grow into his college career.”

On Michigan recruiting Pickett:

“They’ve been here numerous times. They definitely want a chance to be able to sign him and have him play in Ann Arbor. I think wherever he goes, he’s going to fit, including Michigan. He’s been up there to see the place. Obviously, it’s a little colder. His dad and I played in North Dakota together. Adjusting to the cold in October and November was a huge change. But I think he’ll be successful at Michigan or any other school he chooses to go to.”
