Four-star EDGE Jacob Smith talks Michigan, upcoming OV, potentially teaming up with brother

Four-star EDGE Jacob Smith talks Michigan, upcoming OV, potentially teaming up with brother

Michigan landed a commitment from four-star Cheshire (Conn.) Academy defensive lineman Jerod Smith last week.

Now, the Wolverines are looking to close with his twin brother, four-star EDGE Jacob Smith, who just named U-M in his top group.

“They are obviously one of my top schools,” Smith said. “I just want to keep talking to them and build a better relationship with them. I’m going to make my decision soon, so that’s really it. I’m excited to go out there for my official visit on June 3.”

Both Michigan defensive line coach Mike Elston and staffer Dylan Roney, who works closely with U-M’s pass rushers, have been working hard on Smith over the last few months.

“Coach Mike is my guy,” Smith said. “I talk to him the most. I’ve also talked to Coach Roney a few times. They are both nice guys and easy to talk to. They’re straightforward. They don’t have to sell a lot.”

Of course, Michigan is getting a boost from Jerod.

“It would be pretty sick to play with him,” Jacob said with a laugh. “He’s powerful, strong, has a good get off and gets to the point. We’d complement each other well. If the first one doesn’t get the tackle, the second one is.”

As Smith mentioned, Michigan doesn’t have to sell much. The Wolverines’ EDGE production speaks for itself. After all, U-M has sent multiple pass rushers to the NFL over the last few years.

“That’s the reason I started to look at them,” Smith said. “They are EDGE Rush U. If they can develop the guys they’ve developed, then why can’t they develop me? That’s something I’m really looking into.”

Smith visited Michigan this spring and is looking forward to his official visit next month. He will be joined by Jerod as well as his mother, who did not make it to Ann Arbor the first time around.

“I saw what I needed to see when I visited,” Smith said. “I just want to go back and get more of a feel for it and see it if feels right. I need to see if I can see myself there.”

Smith is also set to make official visits to Kentucky and Nebraska. He will make his decision at some point this summer.

At 6-foot-4, 225 pounds, Smith is ranked as the No. 17 EDGE and No. 226 overall prospect nationally, per the On3 Industry ranking.
